Chapter 38: Ziffnel, the Angel of Love I (part 1)

“So, how do you feel?”

“Uh… Well, I feel a little strange. It’s also a bit awkward.”

The high-ranking devil with a body of black, squishy mud, the Turbid Desire, shook her head as if confused.

Before her stood a beautiful woman

Turbid Desire twisted her face as much as possible, imitating a human expression, “How does it feel to throw away the body of a snake and take on the body of a woman, Serpent?”

“… My name is Liliana. Liliana Aran… Ah, wasn’t it?”  The woman shook her head, repeating the countess’s name over and over again, as if she were still disoriented.

Was it because this was her first time in a human body? Or was she simply less advanced than the others?

Turbid Desire, watching Liliana, who had completely forgotten she was once the Colossal Serpent, turned her head and screamed at the saint, who observed with an indifferent expression.

“What should I do? Aren’t we screwed? I never imagined I’d be this stupid—I’m sorry!”

“… You’re too loud. In the sacred halls of tests, silence is the only virtue.”

The brown-haired man, Erman, responded curtly, ignoring the little devil waving her hand in front of him. Without another word, he turned and quickly walked out of the testing room hidden in the basement of the church.

A space made of pure white marble.

As he walked slowly but gracefully down the hallway, Turbid Desire continued to chatter without pause, getting on the saint’s nerves.

“Don’t worry. It might be a little slow, but if you give her some time, she’ll recall the devil’s memories.”

“… ….”

“You know, right? Seeing things like that makes me want a human body, too. So, can you get me one? I’d love to be the princess of this country. Every time that b*tch Nirhil devours a princess and acts all dignified, it makes me furious.”

“… ….”

“Don’t be like that. Just get me one, okay? Would you like me to give birth to your child as a princess?”

“Unless you want to return to the void right now, you’d better shut that filthy mouth.”

Erman turned his head and gave a low warning, his voice edged with irritation.

Despite his stern demeanor, the high-ranking devil was not discouraged. Instead, she clung to him with an even more excited tone.

“If you’re doing this because you miss your dead daughter, don’t you think I could give birth to one? There’s no need to take such risks. Do you really think you can deceive Heaven? The only reason you’re still alive is because your mother in Heaven, Lionelta, the Angel of Death, is protecting you.”

“I don’t want to hear such low-level jokes. As a priest, I have no desire for a woman’s body. And in my life, there will only ever be one daughter—poor Cecil. She is irreplaceable.”

The saint used his power to conceal his presence, leaving only his parting words before completely vanishing.

Deceiving even the high-ranking devil, he disappeared without a trace.

Turbid Desire watched the spot where he had stood and, almost absentmindedly, muttered to herself.

“… It’s not a joke.”

Her body, made of black clay and shaped into a woman’s form, slowly melted onto the floor. The mouth that never stayed shut in front of the saint finally fell silent.

In the middle of an underground corridor filled with stillness, an ancient devil—a great being who had opened her eyes third in the void—was in a very bad mood.

For some reason, even she didn’t know why.

“…Arnhill, what are you thinking about so deeply?”

“… Ah, yes. What did you say?”

A beautiful woman’s voice echoed in her ear.

No—at the call of the Angel of Death, who had once been the eldest of the devils but had betrayed them all and devoured the body of an angel—the Turbid Desire, Arnhill snapped out of her thoughts and responded.

“Nirhil, she has done more than expected. She used magic to summon the Colossal Serpent and swallowed up the entire outskirts of Aran. This must be stopped before the damage worsens.”

“… I’m sure you were giggling and laughing earlier, so why the sudden change in attitude?”

“… When did I do that? Though I was forced to join hands with you, I am still the great angel of heaven.”

As the fourth daughter of God Rom, she had a duty to protect the people of the earth.

Yes, devil was obviously provoking her on purpose, saying that she had enjoyed it.

Tilting her head at Lionelta’s inexplicable behavior, Turbid Desire then nodded as if she understood her intent.

“Well, I get the situation, but what do you want me to do?”

“… Have I not said everything already?”

“Yes, that’s right. The disaster happened there, and the problem has to be resolved. Did you live as an angel for too long and develop some kind of illness in that head of yours? You were the one who decided to stir things up, so now you have to deal with it.”

“… We must, at the very least, save the inhabitants of Aran who were swallowed up along with us.”

“That’s what you, an angel, would do. But since I’m a devil, that’s not my concern. See you next time!”

“Wait a moment. Hey… Hey!”

***

After some time, Turbid Desire could no longer hear the words of the former angel, whose mind seemed to waver between past and present.

She stretched out her stiff body, basking in the warmth of the sun, feeling as if five hundred years of pent-up frustration had finally dissipated.

“Lionelta, there’s no use trying to separate the two of them like that.”

It all came down to Nirhil.

No, this was merely another trial for Cecil’s love. There was no way to separate them.

“If time really did rewind, that woman would have already prepared a solution for it.”

Growing drowsy under the soothing sunlight, the high-ranking devil let out a yawn and mumbled to herself in a hazy voice, teetering on the edge of sleep.

“And personally, I support that woman’s love as well.”

‘I should observe it, learn from it, and use it for myself.‘

In the end, Turbid Desire couldn’t hold back her laughter and began to giggle. She purred in satisfaction as she ran her fingers along the cold surface of the coffin she was lying on.

“Everyone looked like they were having fun, so I decided to give it a try soon. Isn’t it more enjoyable to do these things together?”

She had once said she could never understand and would never become human. Yet that wretched woman had faked her death, secretly escaped, and slipped into a human body.

As her older sister, she couldn’t afford to fall behind.

A pattern symbolizing the royal family of Lyriam.

Gazing at the face of the beautiful princess sleeping beneath the coffin adorned with the roaring silver lion emblem, the legendary devil—who had once devoured all the desires of the world—laughed loudly, her voice filled with unrestrained joy.

It was not the sinister laughter of a villain plotting evil schemes but the delighted laughter of an innocent child receiving a long-awaited gift. A sound so bright and full of mirth that even the listener would find themselves smiling.

For a high-ranking devil scheming beside a saint, it was an oddly pleasant laugh to hear.
