Chapter 73: Treasure (part 1)

Aire cried as she held out her luggage basket with both hands. At first glance, from the side, she looked like a pitiful figure offering her fortune in a desperate plea not to be abandoned.

“W-What!? You and I… You said we were…!”

The gazes around me started to sting.

Aire was a beautiful girl and the daughter of the esteemed 4th Duke. Naturally, there were people who admired her, and just as naturally, there were those who considered it a sin to make her cry.

At that moment, I was a sinner.

“…Give it to me.”

“You’re going to accept it!?”

The person who had been crying moments ago was gone. In her place, Aire beamed with joy and eagerly held out the basket to me.

Once I took it, I checked the contents inside. Unsurprisingly, the heirlooms she had managed to gather on such short notice were rather insignificant. Most of them were 1-star, with only one or two 2-star heirlooms mixed in. There wasn’t a single one above 3-star.

Still, I accepted them gratefully and took the opportunity to point out her mistake.

“Senior, did you brag to others yesterday? About how I became your subordinate?”

“Yes!”

“But do you know what people are saying now? That you and I are engaged.”

“W-What?”

Aire’s eyes widened in shock, as if she couldn’t believe it. No matter how careless she was, she wouldn’t have gone around spreading such a serious rumor.

“T-That can’t be right…!”

“Oh? So it’s a problem for you?”

“Well… yes…”

“Then you should hurry up and clear up the misunderstanding before it spreads any further, right?”

“Is that so…?”

She tilted her head, visibly confused. The situation seemed too complicated for her to process.

I let out a small chuckle and lifted the heirlooms she had given me.

“Anyway, thanks for these, Senior.”

“Oh, it’s nothing! Just say the word, and I’ll give you everything!”

“In that case, would you mind leaving now?”

“Already?”

“It’s almost time for class to start.”

I gestured toward the front of the room. There, our homeroom teacher, Oliver, was glaring at me with a deep frown.

I had no idea why he was looking at me like that, but his expression made it clear—he wanted me to get Aire out of here as soon as possible.

Noticing his gaze, Aire quickly bowed in apology and hurried out of the classroom.

Once she was gone, I looked at the pile of heirlooms she had left behind and pondered how to make use of them. I set them down under my desk, deep in thought.

“After Eritz, now it’s the Elnes family?”

At some point, Syrah, who was sitting next to me, leaned in and whispered.

I glanced at her sideways before looking away. But Syrah ignored my lack of response and moved even closer, tapping my forearm as if she had discovered something amusing.

“Aren’t you just eating your way through the four great families?”

“…Even if I wanted to, the Terra family doesn’t have any daughters.”

“Oh? You knew that?”

Of course, I knew—it was common knowledge in the game. But apparently, Syrah wasn’t aware of that detail.

She raised her eyebrows in surprise and grinned. But to me, that grin didn’t feel like a smile.

When I met her eyes, I realized why.

Her gaze wasn’t smiling. It was cold.

A chill ran down my spine. Quickly, I turned my head away and fixed my attention on the blackboard, clenching my teeth as I ignored the oppressive feeling pressing in from my side.

Fortunately, class started soon after.

Meanwhile, on the other side of the academy…

Aire Elnes was the daughter of the Grand Duke of the North. As his only child, she had been the sole recipient of his love and attention.

Despite growing up showered with affection, she wasn’t spoiled or arrogant—a testament to the Grand Duke’s excellent parenting.

However, being raised in such an environment had left her… naive. Innocent to the point of appearing foolish.

Because of this, she was rarely left alone. A personal attendant always accompanied her.

“My Lady, what has you in such high spirits?”

“Hm? Oh! Ian accepted my gift!”

“A gift…? You mean the heirlooms you brought this morning?”

“Yes! Those!”

Aire beamed like a sunflower in full bloom. Her attendant couldn’t help but smile in response.

But she quickly suppressed it. Smiling so openly in front of her lady wouldn’t be appropriate. Instead, she carefully asked,

“I see. So, does this Ian person now serve under you, my Lady?”

“…No.”

“…My Lady?”

Aire’s bright expression dimmed, a shadow of gloom creeping over her face.

In that instant, the attendant felt something she had never experienced before.

Rage.

Unrelenting, burning rage.

Someone had made her lady sad.

That person needed to die.

The attendant carefully concealed her emotions, tucking them away in the depths of her heart. Then, in a measured voice, she asked, “Did something happen? Or… did he wrong you in some way?”

“No, I was the one who made a mistake…”

“A mistake…? If that is the case, then as your attendant, the fault is mine as well. Please, tell me what happened.”

“Well….”

With a downcast expression, Aire recounted her conversation with Ian.

She had proudly told others that she made Ian her subordinate. However, the rumor had been twisted, turning into an engagement between them.

And Ian had told her to clear up the misunderstanding immediately.

By the time she finished explaining, the attendant had already reached a conclusion.

Ian Clark was trash.

‘That man…’

Her grip tightened.
