“Demon King…?”
“Defeat?”
Hearing Ian’s words, Noah and Stella exchanged glances. His tone was far too serious for a joke, making it difficult to determine whether he was speaking in jest or if he truly meant it.
After a moment of contemplation, they realized there was no reason for him to joke in this situation. Accepting the possibility, they began to seriously consider what he had said.
“I—I’m always on Ian’s side!”
Clever as ever, Noah didn’t question the feasibility of his words. Instead, she immediately took his side.
In fact, even if he had said he was going to kill a god instead of the Demon King, she still would have supported him.
Unlike Noah, however, Stella took his words at face value and began analyzing the implications. Perhaps that was the difference between someone raised to rule a nation and someone who had simply been raised to live a comfortable life.
“Demon… Even the first emperor failed… Possibility… No, to some extent…”
After running some calculations in her mind, Stella concluded that Ian’s goal was impossible—at least based on the information available so far.
“…Is that really your goal?”
“Yeah.”
“There are plenty of other things you could aim for. Why this?”
“There’s no other choice.”
“…You’re not some hero in a fairy tale.”
Even in modern times, heroes didn’t aspire to defeat the Demon King anymore. People criticized such narratives for instilling unrealistic dreams and expectations in cadets.
It was like how there were no longer children’s books in Korea about redheads or bald protagonists.
“Do you just want people to call you a hero?”
“That’s not what this is about.”
“Then why did you set such a goal?”
“Hmm… just because?”
“See?” Stella scoffed, as if she had expected that answer all along. She dismissed Ian with a wave of her hand, but his determination didn’t waver in the slightest.
After studying him for a moment, she twisted a lock of her hair between her fingers and muttered, “Is this what it’s like to be the hero’s wife? …Not bad.”
“What?”
“What, what!?”
“You just called yourself his wife, didn’t you?”
“When did I!?”
Her face instantly flushed as she opened her mouth in protest, but Ian and Noah had both heard her words loud and clear.
However, rather than pressing the issue, they chose to let it slide. It wasn’t the kind of statement worth dwelling on.
“Alright, I’ll help you,” she eventually said.
“Thank you.”
“Not that it could happen without me in the first place.”
Stella sounded extremely proud of herself—and with good reason. As she had pointed out, Ian’s goal would be impossible without the support of the Four Dukes.
Defeating the Demon King, after all, meant an all-out war between humanity and demons.
“This vacation, I’ll have to convince my father.”
“Do you want me to go with you?” Ian offered.
“No—it’d be counterproductive if you went.”
Ian recalled how desperate the Duke of Eritz had been to hide certain truths from his daughter.
What would happen if she suddenly declared she wanted to achieve a seemingly impossible goal, only for it to be revealed that a man had put such ideas in her head?
No matter how rational or fair the Duke was, he would inevitably oppose her.
“…then I’ll just pass the time with other people over break?” Ian asked.
“They’ll all be gone, so you won’t see anyone anyway.”
“I guess I’ll go somewhere else…”
“Where are you going?”
“My hometown.”
Ian thought about his hometown—Baron Clark’s territory, a secluded region nestled deep in the mountains to the southeast.
“Ian!”
Hearing him mention his home, Noah eagerly raised her hand. When Ian blinked at her in confusion, she beamed and made an announcement.
“My hometown is near yours, Ian!”
“…What?”
“What!?”
Ian stared at her in disbelief. He had never heard this before.
Meanwhile, Stella looked equally bewildered.
No… why are you so excited?
Regardless of their reactions, Noah was simply thrilled at the thought of seeing Ian even during vacation.
“We can play together over break!”
***
[Ian’s POV]
Vacation had begun.
As an academy that valued practical experience, breaks were short.
“Take care.”
The cadets who had inherited summons from their families had to return to their estates to fulfill their duties. Protecting their territories and the realm of humanity took priority over leisurely breaks.
Naturally, Ian wasn’t included in that category.
‘The only thing I inherited is this body.’
All of his summons were ones he had obtained through his own efforts. Even that ability came from himself, not from “Ian Clark”, the original owner of this body. In other words, he had received nothing from Baron Clark.
So, he got into a carriage with the simple intention of going home to relax.
Noah, of course, climbed into the wagon right behind him.
From a distance, Stella, Syrah, and Dinua watched him with anxious expressions.
Dinua, who had not inherited a summon, had attempted to board Ian’s carriage as well. Unfortunately, she was stopped by the staff.
“Let’s go, Ian!”
Noah, her arms full of snacks for the trip, smiled and offered Ian a potato.
Accepting it gratefully, Ian took a bite. The well-baked potatoes from this world were sweet and salty, even without any seasoning.
The carriage rolled forward, steadily heading toward their destination.
After traveling for who knows how long, the driver finally knocked on the carriage wall.
“We’ve arrived.”
Excited to see his hometown again, Ian quickly opened the door—only to be met with a vast field and the unmistakable stench of human waste.
