Chapter 59: I Believe (part 1)

“Did you have a good night?”

At dawn, thanks to the maid who arrived just as the carriage was set to depart, we woke up and met each other’s eyes.

The night had passed so quietly that it was hard to believe a man and a woman had shared the same room.

Syrah expressed her dissatisfaction with a rude attitude, upset that I hadn’t t0uched her until the very end.

However, there was a reason why I couldn’t t0uch her.

‘No, how could I?’

Apart from not wanting to have any attachments in this world, I now had three summons monitoring my actions 24 hours a day. Unlike when they were alive, they didn’t need sleep. Even if they were mentally exhausted, they could still watch me in shifts.

‘Knowing that, the time I had alone was greatly reduced.’

Previously unaware of this, I had enjoyed my own private moments in the bathroom… but that was no longer possible.

No matter how strong I was, I wasn’t strong enough to engage in intimate moments with other w0men in front of three female summons.

We ate breakfast under the maid’s guidance, then boarded the carriage at dawn and headed to the academy.

The lord never showed his face, not even once, but I didn’t mind. After all, it was natural for him to have a hard time meeting our gaze.

“Hmn~”

Perhaps because she had woken up so early and was tired from the carriage ride, Syrah, though clearly dissatisfied with me, leaned on my shoulder and tried to sleep as soon as the carriage began moving.

‘If you don’t open your mouth, you’re actually quite cute.’

Watching her asleep, leaning on my shoulder like a doll, I couldn’t help but smile. Eventually, I dozed off as well, my head lightly resting on hers.

Soon, the sun rose.

The academy we hadn’t seen in a long time welcomed us back.

“Ian Clark and Syrah Acacia…”

Despite riding the fastest carriage since dawn, it still took considerable time for the wagons from other cities to arrive at the academy.

As a result, we arrived late, and the sight of two individuals arriving simultaneously in less than pristine attire quickly became fodder for speculation among the cadets.

Of course, Syrah ignored the rumors entirely, taking her seat as though nothing had happened. Similarly, I sat down casually, unconcerned about the opinions of background extras whose evaluations didn’t matter to me.

However, whether our dignified attitudes attracted more attention or not, Oliver eventually called the two of us.

“The two of you, follow the ordinance to the office immediately after it’s over.”

“Eh, why?”

“I think the two of you know best.”

Syrah pouted, protesting with her lips, but Oliver wasn’t swayed. After the ordinance, we followed him to the office, where we were met with a loud outburst.

“You two, are you crazy!?”

“Ugh, my ears… Why?”

“Why!? Don’t you know how serious it is for academy cadets to leave the academy without permission?”

“…Is it really such a big deal?”

Syrah tilted her head, her tone and expression genuinely curious.

I agreed with her sentiment.

If leaving was such an issue, the academy should’ve enforced stricter measures to prevent cadets from doing so in the first place. Wasn’t it the academy’s structural problem that allowed us to leave on a wagon?

But Oliver pinned the blame squarely on us.

“Yes, it’s a big deal! Especially with the academy’s current state of unrest—what would you have done if you had an accident outside?”

“An accident…? Are you serious?”

It sounded absurd. In the realm of mankind, summoners—the heroes of humanity—having accidents?

Even 1-star summons were strong enough to stop a charging wagon. And we were 3-star summoners!

I could confidently say that even if a modern armored division turned against us, we would walk away unscathed.

Still, Oliver persisted. His logic was difficult to grasp, but as he continued, I found myself reluctantly nodding.

“You could be stabbed while walking, or a demon spy could target you.”

“Ah… maybe.”

“You really believe that?”

Syrah shook her head in denial, but I couldn’t.
