Chapter 65: Reason (part 2)

“Hhmmn, Ian, Ian…”

“Yes, Senior. Let it all out…”

I sang the national anthem inwardly, while str0king Dinua, who was weeping against my chest as she shed tears.

She was overwhelmed by emotions, crying so hard that she couldn’t even respond to the situation. If someone had called her trash for being caught, she wouldn’t have been able to refute it. Of course, if she wanted to make an excuse, she had plenty of things to say.

‘This is too much.’

Dinua’s clothes were practically see-through l!ngerie, with only a single layer of underwear beneath. There was more exp0sed skin than covered, and naturally, the amount of bare skin t0uching mine was significant.

The soft skin of a teenage g!rl was like an asymmetrical strategic weapon—one that couldn’t be resisted with sheer mental fortitude.

“Ian, how about letting go for now?”

Fortunately, Syrah found Dinua’s continued clinging to me unsightly, so she tried to separate us.

I sighed inwardly and whispered into Dinua’s ear.

“… Senior? Now—”

“—Dinua.”

“Yes?”

“Call me Dinua.”

“… Dinua, let go now.”

“Yes—!”

Hearing a demand from a junior a year younger than her seemed to please Dinua. She smiled broadly and stepped away from me.

Before I could even register that her tear-streaked face was surprisingly dry, Syrah pulled me back by my upper body.

“Now, get out of the way. I’m sitting on the bed.”

“Hey, wait.”

Ignoring me, Syrah forced her way between me and Dinua, dropping her figure into the space and claiming it for herself.

Dinua looked at her with warmth, but Syrah, acting as if nothing had happened, turned to her and spoke.

“Senior Dinua.”

“Yes? What is it?”

“Senior, is the maid neglecting you?”

“Huh? No… not really?”

As if she had been caught off guard, Dinua let out an awkward laugh and avoided Syrah’s gaze. Even I, someone who wasn’t particularly good at reading emotions, could tell what she was feeling.

It was the same reaction often seen in cadets who had been outcast.

“… Dinua, is the maid neglecting you?”

“No, of course not!”

“Tell me the truth. It’s okay. I don’t even have a maid myself.”

Hearing my words, Dinua hesitated, as if realizing it would be wrong to keep hiding the truth.

“I’m not really being neglected… I just let them do as they please…”

“Why?”

“No, it’s just… it’s hard to be a maid…”

“That sounds like an excuse. Is she even working at all?”

Syrah, who had been listening quietly, interjected with a sharp remark, making Dinua frown.

“… Don’t talk back.”

“Ah, don’t be so mean~ Ian, she’s bullying me~”

Syrah whined as she clung to my chest, making Dinua’s glare even sharper.

After taking a deep breath and composing herself, Dinua carefully explained why she was in this situation.

“… I’m a useless person. I shouldn’t trouble others.”

“What? Why would you say that?”

“Because I’m the concubine’s child.”

With a bitter smile, Dinua dropped a bombshell.

A concubine’s child.

The moment she said those words, it was as if time had frozen. Both Syrah and I stiffened slightly.

Even though she was the child of a concubine, she had never seemed like one. At least outwardly, Dinua was treated just as well as the cadets from other noble families.

That was because she had a 3-star summon.

When I pointed that out, Dinua explained the reason behind it.

“Originally, I would have been abandoned right away… or sent off to become another noble’s concubine… but I had a talent for summoning. I was lucky enough to successfully summon a 3-star summon…”

“So—you joined the academy?”

“Yes…”

After hearing that, I finally understood why she had gone mad and made a contract with a demon.

She had no parents, no family, no friends—nothing.

All the people who should have loved and cherished her the most were her enemies, so there was no reason for her to remain on the side of humanity.

It was people like them who had turned her into an enemy of mankind.

  1. well, now we know why she grew to be how she is.
but if being a high star summoner makes you as if not more important than a high noble, doesn’t that mean she can get emancipated from that family? I think that’s what she’ll need to do sooner or later or they’ll try to use her
