Chapter 16: Test at this Timing? (part 1)

After the first period, homeroom (HR), we started the second period. I

Hyunjin firmly believed that they would study the usual range of classes. It wasn’t just him; other students must have thought the same.

“We will start testing now.”  

Kobayashi Monjiro, the teacher in charge of Japanese history, entered at the start of the second period.  

Most of the students were taken aback by the sudden announcement, and so was Hyunjin. 

A test at this timing?  

Originally, it was planned to take place in about two weeks, so one of the students raised his hand and asked, “Teacher! Didn’t you originally intend to do it in two weeks?”  

“Good question. However, the paper test schedule can be adjusted at the teacher’s discretion at any time. If you have been preparing and reviewing regularly, you can avoid failing grades.”  

The failing grade threshold for the test Monjiro mentioned was 45 points. It wasn’t a particularly high bar. The question was, as Monjiro said, how much one studied regularly—that was the deciding factor.  

Hyunjin had been studying on his own recently, so he was confident he wouldn’t fail. The problem lay with Ryunosuke and Amelia, who struggled significantly with Japanese history. Both appeared worried.  

Still, was this situation actually favorable? Since only the two of them would likely need to study together, their relationship might deepen.  

Hyunjin prepared his notes for the test while thinking about that. He didn’t realize that Amelia kept glancing back and forth between him and Ryunosuke.  

“Cheating will result in zero points! Anyone who fails the test will have to attend make-up classes and extra exams,” Monjiro warned.  

“Eh~? Teacher, isn’t that too harsh?”  

“Even the main building agrees with this policy!”  

“Ah, I think I’m going to fail the exam!”  

“Should I treat everyone talking right now as zero points?” Monjiro’s stern words immediately silenced the class.  

“Now, the students in the front row should pass the test papers to the back.”  

Shraak…Shraak…

The faint rustling of papers being handed back filled the room.  

“Let the test begin!” Monjiro announced.  

As soon as he spoke, the classroom fell into silence. 

Some students coughed or breathed heavily, but no one dared to resist the exam.  

No one wanted to fail and be stuck with make-up classes. Each student focused intently, determined not to fall short. Monjiro wandered among the desks, scanning for any signs of dishonesty. His sharp gaze hovered over each student as he moved through the rows.

“Alright, the test is over. Collect all the papers and bring them to the front! I’ll grade them right away,” Monjiro declared.  

Since the test only lasted about 30 minutes, Monjiro decided to use the remaining class time for grading. He opened the exam papers on his desk and began marking them swiftly.  

‘I feel uneasy,’ Hyunjin thought.  

The questions he and Ohana had studied weren’t on the test. He had to rack his brain to answer questions from unfamiliar topics.  

Click, click. Squeak.  

The sound of Monjiro’s pen scratching against the papers echoed through the room.  

‘What would the results be?’ Hyunjin waited nervously as Monjiro continued grading.  

Finally, Monjiro spoke. “The grading is done. I will call the names of students who need to stay back.”  

‘Please, not me,’ Hyunjin prayed silently.  

“Well, first… Amelia Iori Lionheart.”  

Amelia flinched at hearing her name and visibly trembled. It was understandable—she expected this.  

“Next, Natsuki Ryunosuke!”  

Ryunosuke nodded silently. He seemed to have already resigned himself to the outcome.  

“Kamiyama Ohana.”  

A familiar name was called next. Ohana appeared puzzled but remained composed, thinking she could handle it.  

Finally, Monjiro announced, “Lastly, Kim Hyunjin. That’s all.”  

When Hyunjin heard his name, he felt an overwhelming sense of despair.  

‘Does that make sense? I worked hard on this!’ he thought, frustrated.  

“We will hold supplementary classes after school for three days, followed by a retest. That’s all for today’s class,” Monjiro stated firmly.  

When Monjiro stood to leave, Hyunjin couldn’t contain his confusion. Raising his hand, he cautiously asked, “Teacher, could you tell us the scores of the failing students?”  

Monjiro nodded and replied, “Hmm… 21 points, 29 points, 34 points, and 43 points, respectively. That’s all.”  

“Stand! Salute!”  

“Thanks for your hard work!!”  

“The class representative failed, too…” Monjiro muttered, glancing at Amelia before leaving the classroom.  

The results left Amelia, Ryunosuke, Ohana, and Hyunjin facing the prospect of supplementary lessons.  

Though Hyunjin was relieved that his score was the highest among the failing students, it felt like a hollow victory.
