Chapter 16: Test at this timing? (part 2)

No matter what, it was a failing grade, so the issue was whether we could pass the test or not.

“Haa…” Hyunjin sighed, and Sojuro, who was next to him, looked over and laughed before speaking.

“Ha ha ha! Yes, man, Kim! You lost to the prez!”

“So, what do you mean?” Hyunjin asked.

“I just wanted to say you look good, Kim! You must have been summoned by the student council president and done this and that!”

“What is *that*?”

“That… it’s…” Sojuro’s face flushed red all at once, but he still stared at me with an envious expression.

“Kiba, you’d better start learning how to read people’s moods,” Hyunjin said casually.

“What, what, why?” Sojuro exclaimed.

“That’s why you’re not popular with women, Kiba.”

“You b*stard! There are things you can say, and things you shouldn’t say—!”

Hyunjin exhaled heavily. Then, curious, he turned to Sojuro and asked, “Ah, Kiba. Just in case, how many points did you get on this test?”

“Hmph, now you’re asking that! This great one’s score is 96 points! Are you surprised?”

“Oh…”

With a confident expression, Sojuro looked at Hyunjin and said smugly, “You said you studied? Ha! You’re not enough to defeat this great me!”

“I guess so,” Hyunjin replied.

“Aren’t you too indifferent, Kim?”

“But isn’t that right?”

“Damn it, there’s no point in teasing you!”

Sojuro huffed and puffed while glaring at Hyunjin.

Just then, Ohana stood up from her seat and walked straight toward Hyunjin, “I’m sorry, Kim-kun! It’s all my fault!”

Her sudden outburst, louder than usual, drew the attention of everyone around us.

“What happened…?” someone muttered nearby.

“He went out with Kamiyama the other day, and I guess it must have something to do with that,” another voice chimed in.

“I’m curious about the details, but this is getting more and more…”

Whispers and rumors began to fill the air. To calm the situation, Hyunjin spoke to Ohana in an encouraging tone.

“It’s okay, Kamiyama-san. We studied together, but that wasn’t part of the exam material.”

“What?! You said you studied together, Kim?!”

Sojuro, overhearing the conversation, dramatically fell backward in shock. His reactions were always exaggerated, as if on cue.

That wasn’t the point Hyunjin was trying to make, though.

“What is it, Kiba? What’s wrong with studying together?”

“You! Where did you even study?”

“I studied at Kamiyama-san’s house for a bit. Is there a problem with that?”

“Argh, you lucky b*stard!”

“I was only preparing for the exam. Why are you so jealous?”

“Chit, this is why guys surrounded by women are the worst!”

“What are you talking about, Kiba?”

Looking at his outburst, Hyunjin couldn’t help but think about it. It really didn’t make sense—why were the main characters in romantic comedies always so lucky?

Sojuro envied me, but my attitude was more along the lines of, “What’s the big deal?” or “We just studied.”

Still, since Hyunjin wasn’t the main character of a story, he doubted anyone would fall for him. On the contrary, the situation just made him want to be mad at Ryunosuke.

“Ryu-kun, let’s study hard too,” Ohana said to Ryunosuke, who was sitting right in front of her.

Ryunosuke responded with a light laugh. “Ah… Well, I guess we should. But Hana-chan, didn’t you say you were brushing up on Japanese history?”

“Yeah, that’s… As I said earlier, Kim-kun and I studied separately at my house, but the test material ended up being outside our range of study.”

Ryunosuke and Ohana were comfortable addressing each other by nicknames—different from how Hyunjin interacted with others.

“Oh ho ho ho! Natsuki-kun, Kamiyama-san, and Kim-kun! You all failed together!”

Amelia quietly approached them without warning, grinning mischievously.

Ryunosuke turned to her and replied, “Ah, Iori-san. I’m surprised to see you fail too.”

“Hey, am I not surprised myself? It was such a sudden test that I didn’t even have time to study!”

Just looking at Amelia trying to excuse her poor Japanese history knowledge, Hyunjin couldn’t help but find her cute.

“By the way, today’s going to be a compulsory remedial session. What should we do? I think we need to put our heads together and figure it out. Hana-chan, Kim-kun, and Iori-san too.”

“Yeah, that’s right…”

“I agree as well.”

“I don’t think we should wait three whole days!”

The four of them exchanged glances before someone blurted, “In that case, leave it to me!”

Sojuro suddenly raised his voice, drawing everyone’s attention.

“Do you have a plan, Kiba-kun?” Ryunosuke asked.

“Well, of course! I have already guessed the test scope! I’ll write the genealogy myself. You all just need to handle the rest!”

With that, Sojuro confidently began jotting down a genealogy of the expected test range.

Though his approach was eccentric, it was reassuring to know we had someone knowledgeable in Japanese history helping us directly.
