Class hours went smoothly, as if the fact that we had failed meant nothing.
During the break, Ryunosuke, Ohana, Amelia, and I would review genealogies and take simple tests.
“Ha, this is pretty difficult,” Ryunosuke remarked, “Is this a tough problem even for the honor student, Iori?”
“Hey, Natsuki-san! If you keep looking at me like that, you might get a serious nose injury!” Amelia said, glancing at me with a quiet smile.
‘What is she saying?’ I sighed inwardly. I couldn’t read minds, after all.
“Yes, compared to the rest of us who studied hard, Iori-san got that score without even trying. If she actually studied, she’d do better than all of us,” Ohana pointed out.
“Yes, of course! Isn’t that obvious? Oh ho ho ho!” Amelia responded with exaggerated confidence.
“Well, but… who’s going to ask for a retest?”
A heavy silence fell at Ohana’s words. It was like deciding who would tie a bell around the cat’s neck.
Due to Monjiro’s personality as a Japanese history teacher, we’d need someone persuasive to approach him.
“I see… Kobayashi-sensei is a bit intimidating, so I don’t think I can do it,” Ohana said hesitantly.
“Because of Kobayashi-sensei’s personality, if you simply ask for a retest, he might refuse outright,” Amelia commented.
“Mm! Certainly!” Ryunosuke agreed.
“So, what now?”
Ryunosuke looked at Sojuro who hadn’t even failed, muttering next to him, his expression heating up in frustration.
“Kiba, you didn’t fail anyway,” Ryunosuke said pointedly.
“But this situation is quite fun, isn’t it?” Kiba retorted.
“Yes, Kim-kun. Aside from Kiba-san, this is a pitiful situation for the rest of us,” Amelia added.
“The question is, who’s going to tell Kobayashi-sensei we need to retake the exam?” Amelia asked, glancing at me again.
“Okay, I’ll do it,” I volunteered.
“Are you sure, Kim-kun?”
“I can’t help it if no one else will.”
“We won’t forget your sacrifice, Kim-kun…!!” Sojuro said dramatically, wiping away nonexistent tears.
I rolled my eyes. Was this guy for real? Anyone watching would think he was sending me off to war.
“Don’t make it sound so strange, Kiba,” I said, shaking my head.
“Huh? You probably know what Kobayashi-sensei likes, right?”
“Kobayashi-sensei… Hmm, sure.”
Sojuro placed his hand on his chin, deep in thought.
“So, if all three of you retook the exam, are you confident you wouldn’t fail?” Ohana asked cautiously, tilting her head shyly.
“Ah, looking at the genealogy, I think I can manage,” Ryunosuke said confidently.
“Yes, memorization is sufficient if the range is clearly defined,” Amelia added calmly.
Ohana seemed less worried, but I couldn’t say the same about Ryunosuke and Amelia.
Personally, it would be best for me and Ohana to step aside, allowing them to connect with each other.
“Kiba, do you know what Kobayashi-sensei likes?”
“Hmm… Kobayashi-sensei likes yokan,” Sojuro finally said. (G: Yokan is a traditional Japanese confection made from sweet red bean paste, sugar, and agar.)
“Yo..can?” I repeated, puzzled.
I remembered what the main characters liked, but not every little detail about the supporting ones.
“If I can prepare something, I will. Tell me,” I urged.
“Honestly, I’m not sure you’ll have time. Kobayashi-sensei likes yokan, dango, and traditional sweets, especially the ones labeled as special,” Sojuro revealed.
“There’s no place around here that sells those. How do we get them?” I asked.
“That’s the problem,” Sojuro admitted, shrugging.
Amelia, who had been listening, suddenly intervened. “Leave it to me.”
She pulled out her smartphone and made a quick call. “Rachel, could you prepare some yokan, dango, and Japanese sweets for us? Green tea, too. Yes, thank you.”
Amelia hung up and smiled.
“Oh, there was a way! You’re amazing, Iori-san!”
“Hmph, of course. But as a student, leaving the school during class is a problem,” Amelia replied matter-of-factly.
“Will it arrive before lunch?”
“Of course. Kim-kun, do your best to persuade Kobayashi-sensei!” Amelia said with a determined nod.
There was no need to extend the retest over three days. I planned to resolve it immediately.

When lunchtime arrived, Rachel appeared at the academy gate, holding the items Amelia had requested. In her hands were fine Japanese sweets and a paper bag of green tea.
“Rachel-san, you’ve worked hard,” I said.
“This much is nothing. On the contrary, you’re the one putting in the effort, Kim-kun,” Rachel replied politely.
“Thank you, Rachel-san,” I said gratefully.
After receiving the items, I nodded and headed back to meet Amelia, who was waiting nearby.
