Chapter 36: Nonsense IV (part 1)

I always felt keenly that time must be a ruthless woman—weak to the strong and infinitely strong to the weak.

This was by no means an unfounded sentiment; I had my reasons for feeling this way.

For example, two months ago, when I was in Lumentium, time passed terribly slowly, as if it had stopped altogether.

An emperor who turned people’s lives upside down with words, a princess who made my feeble heart strain because I didn’t know when she would raise her fist, or a saintess who had a seemingly relaxed smile but still got on my nerves—time passed slowly when everything seemed to tighten my heart.

However, after exchanging a secret ‘contract’ with Bianca two weeks ago, time passed quickly until it was time for me to visit the Castana Marquis family.

I wanted to prepare myself mentally or make various preparations before visiting the Castana Marquis family, but when I came to my senses, it seemed that the time for me to perform with Bianca and the Castana Marquis family was approaching.

And so, the historic moment arrived when the Duke of Estel and the Marquis of Castana decided to end their thousand-year feud by engaging the sons and daughters of both families.

Well, it was only a nominal engagement, not a real one.

By the way, the news of Bianca and me getting engaged was not disclosed to anyone except a few members of the Estel family. Since it wasn’t a real engagement in the first place, it couldn’t be said to be auspicious, and if you were to be engaged to a daughter of the Marquis of Castana, who was practically an enemy, there was a risk of forming a bad public opinion among people who didn’t know the whole situation.

In fact, I would never have accepted Bianca’s offer had it not been for the huge stake in this case.

To hold an engagement ceremony with that nasty girl. Even though it wasn’t real, I had to pretend to be a sweet lover. Wasn’t it a terrible thing that made you shudder just by imagining it?

“It hasn’t been long since you broke off your engagement to Sarah, and now you are getting engaged again. Cain, I am really worried about sending you away like this.”

Incidentally, my father was one of the few people who knew why I was visiting the Marquis of Castana.

“…I’m not a child anymore, so what do you mean you’re worried about me?”

When I asked with a bewildered look at my father’s sudden lamentation, my father furrowed his brow at me.

“It means that I’m worried. It is a tragedy that you don’t notice why I’m talking to you like this…”

“…..”

“That’s the problem. Now I only feel sorry for Bianca, who is trying to set things up with an idiot like you.”

Saying that, my father took out a tie pin from his bosom. It was made of platinum, with a large lapis lazuli in the middle, looking incredibly expensive at first glance.

“Look. It’s a tie pin that Bianca gave me as a gift on her last visit. While my one and only son is an unfilial child who wouldn’t waste even a penny on my birthday, Bianca said she wanted to give me this as a commemoration of her visit to the Duchy of Estel. Isn’t it a step that really contrasts with the guy in front of me?”

“…..”

It was really ridiculous!

When did she even have the time to go pay such a bribe to my father?

No, I wondered why she had paid such a bribe to my father in the first place. What kind of terrifying scheme was being plotted so that such an expensive tie pin could be casually presented as a gift?

As I pondered over the identity of Bianca’s vicious conspiracy, my father pulled something out of his pocket and handed it to me, as if he had just remembered.

“Oh, come to think of it, I forgot this. Come on, take it.”

“…?”

I accepted it with a bit of bewilderment. It was a beautiful bracelet made of gold. The bracelet was studded with two green peridots, presumably polished by a renowned craftsman.

“It is a gift from Bianca. She told me to give it to you. Originally, she was going to hand it to you right away, but I heard that she couldn’t tell you while looking at your face because she was embarrassed. Wow, everything she said was so cute. The only thing I can think of is how wasteful that child is for a guy like you.”

“…what else…”

As I listened to my father’s words, I opened my mouth wide in embarrassment.

No matter how much I thought about it, all I could think of was the huge gap between the Bianca I knew and the Bianca my father knew.

How long did that woman intend to go around pretending?

I thoughtlessly tried to wear the bracelet my father gave me on my right wrist.

But at that moment, my father quietly dissuaded me from doing so.

“Oh, come to think of it, she asked me to tell you to wear it on your left wrist. I’m not sure why.”

“…left wrist?”

It was true; she was a woman who had no place for words to be fussy. I wondered why she was making such a fuss about having at least one bracelet.

‘Well, I can wear it later.’

Since I was the type of person who didn’t wear jewelry to begin with, this kind of thing was just cumbersome for me.
