Chapter 48: Resolution (part 2)

I took Dinua upstream of a river with a large waterfall.

Upon finding clean water, I carefully scooped some into my hands and inspected it for any foreign substances.

‘I think it’s safe to drink,’ I thought.

To be cautious, I swallowed a very small amount, then waited about five minutes to confirm there were no adverse effects. Once satisfied, I offered the water to the two of them.

Like me, they scooped the water with their hands, tasting it carefully before dipping their feet in to rinse off the mud clinging to their bodies.

“What about the wet clothes?” I asked.

“…we can dry them,” Stella replied.

“With what?”

“What do you mean? Have you forgotten who I am? Just gather some firewood.”

She gestured toward the back of her hand, and it dawned on me again that this was a fantasy world. Stella was a summoner, and her summon specialized in fire.

There were moments like this when the boundaries between reality and this otherworld blurred for me. Even after months, my ingrained common sense hadn’t fully adjusted. Perhaps I was too old to adapt quickly.

I began collecting firewood by cutting branches nearby. Once the pile was ready, Stella extended her hand, and flames erupted from it like a flamethrower, instantly igniting the branches.

The intense flames began to dry our clothes as the warmth enveloped us. Both of them reached out toward the fire, basking in the heat, when suddenly I noticed something.

I quickly lowered my head.

‘… Right, their clothes are wet.’

The water used to rinse off the mud had seeped into their garments. The once-pristine academy uniforms now clung to their b0dies, revealing their underga*rments.

Noticing my reaction, Stella tilted her head.

“What? Are you feeling unwell?”

“… No,” I replied curtly.

“Then why are you acting like that?”

“I’m just preparing an excuse for later,” I said vaguely.

“—What? That sounds weird.”

Stella turned to Dinua, seeking confirmation.

When she glanced at Dinua, who had been enjoying the warmth, Stella realized her own soaked clothing was equally revealing. Startled, she looked down, noticing how transparent her uniform had become.

Her face flushed. Checking her own appearance, she found the same issue.

Grinding her teeth, she turned to me.

“… Did you see?”

“Well, it’s hard not to,” I admitted.

“… You pe*rvert!”

“It’s not my fault. You were the ones who showed me.”

“That confidence makes you even more of a per*vert,” she grumbled.

Dinua, who had been quietly basking by the fire, pouted and interjected.

“… What are you two talking about?”

Stella, without a word, pointed to her chest. Dinua followed her gaze and realized her own predicament—a plain white bra was now visible through her damp uniform. Blushing, she muttered defensively.

“… I don’t normally wear something like this.”

“Sure, sure,” I replied with a neutral tone.

“I mean it! I usually wear cuter and, um… se*xier things!”

Ignoring Dinua’s flustered attempt at justification, I decided to steer the conversation toward more important matters.

“So, you two, what’s the plan now?”

“Plan?” Dinua asked, confused.

“… What are you getting at?” Stella feigned ignorance.

I clarified, “This is an exam. Technically, we’re competitors, aren’t we?”

“Competitors? Ian, you wouldn’t actually hurt me, would you?” Dinua asked, her voice laced with worry.

“This isn’t that kind of test. But if you accept my conditions, I’ll let you both join me.”

“Conditions?”

“Yes, conditions.”

Before I could elaborate, Dinua eagerly raised her hand.

“Me! I’ll agree!”

“You don’t even know what they are yet.”

“It’s fine! I’ll do anything Ian asks!”

And just like that, Dinua declared her allegiance. I turned to Stella with a smirk.

With a 2-1 majority, Stella had little choice but to join. Besides, she had already lost to me in a one-on-one match.

Sighing in defeat, Stella asked, “Fine, what are your conditions?”

“For this test, I want your help to secure first place,” I stated plainly.

“… You care about rankings?”

“Not really.”

Stella looked confused, so I explained.

“This exam isn’t about the ranking itself—it’s about what comes with it. The system feeds me, not the rank.”

“… Fine. That’s fair,” Stella conceded.

“You’re not going for the top rank yourself?” I asked.

“Idiot. If you take first place, it works in my favor,” she said with a sly grin.

“How so?”

She leaned in slightly and answered, “If I lose to the top-ranked cadet, people will think I’m strong by association.”

“… So no complaints later?”

“Of course not,” she affirmed.

“Me neither!” Dinua chimed in.

The three of us placed our hands together in agreement. For a brief moment, I felt like a character from “Romance of the Three Kingdoms.”

Perhaps that was fitting—after all, this world didn’t have its own version of the Three Kingdoms.
