Chapter 50: Initiation (part 1)

Puquaah!

The 35-meter-tall sea serpent was too massive to be hidden beneath the lake, its segmented body resembling a machine.

Most Summoners, who spent their entire lives inland, would never encounter such sea monsters. This particular beast, originally a creature of the saltwater seas, had appeared in the lake, likely because this space was not real.

“…Do we really have to fight something like that?”

“Exactly.”

Stella eyed the enormous serpent with a slightly weary voice. Despite her repeated questions, my response remained unchanged.

The creature was enormous, but apart from its size, it had no remarkable abilities. It was classified as an intermediate-level monster—intimidating due to its sheer bulk, yet manageable for us to defeat.

‘I need to be more cautious of the other cadets.’

The real challenge wasn’t the serpent itself but the time and the presence of other cadets. Someone might have the idea of attacking us while we are engaged in a serious battle.

“We’ll use full force from the start,” I said firmly.

“…Aren’t you overdoing it?”

“It’s a waste of time to hold back.”

The serpent was huge, its massive body thrashing wildly. Before long, the commotion would attract the attention of cadets observing from afar. To avoid any complications, we needed to finish it quickly.

I extended my hand and summoned Theresia.

“Come out—Theresia.”

“Well…Master, didn’t you say yesterday that you’d only give me that chance after the exam?”

“After the exam,” I reiterated.

“…I’ll trust you,” she muttered reluctantly.

Though clearly displeased about having to cooperate with other summons instead of fighting alone, there wasn’t much I could do to accommodate her preferences during an exam.

“Salamander,” Stella called out her summon.

“Dim!”

Stella and Dinua followed suit, summoning their own creatures.

The sea serpent, sensing the powerful aura emanating from the summoned beasts, twisted around, baring its sharp teeth.

[Kyaakh!]

“I’ll lead. Stella, focus on attacking. Got it?”

“You think I’m worried about that now?” Stella replied with a laugh as she stepped forward.

She was right; there wasn’t time for hesitation. We had hunted together countless times before.

“That’s fair. Then—do your best.”

At my command, Theresia launched herself toward the sea serpent.

***

The battle began.

The massive serpent, 35 meters long, began thrashing violently, sending waves of water crashing in all directions.

Each strike of its enormous body sent tens of tons of water spraying toward our summoned beasts.

“Sorry, but,” I murmured, watching its efforts.

This creature was no match for Theresia—a 3-star summon, a being hailed as a hero even when she was alive. The serpent’s water attacks were futile against her.

“Master is just too clever,” Theresia remarked, leaping onto the sea serpent. In moments, she scaled its towering body.

The serpent, realizing the danger as Theresia neared its neck, panicked and tried to dive into the lake.

“Not so fast!”

But Theresia’s sword was quicker. Her weapon—the Phoenix Sword, a blade she had carried even in death—shimmered with flames. Sparks ignited along the blade, blazing brightly as they consumed everything in their path.

Hwareuk!

The sword pierced the serpent’s thick hide at one of its joints, carving deep into its flesh.

[Kiaah!!]

The serpent screamed in pain, but everyone present knew that wasn’t enough to kill it.

“Salamander!”

As Theresia landed back on the ground, cutting through the serpent’s body, a massive flame erupted from Salamander.

The fire, aimed at the serpent’s exposed flesh, became a fatal blow that it couldn’t withstand.

[──!!!]

The intense heat rendered the serpent’s vocal cords useless, its flesh cooking and hardening. The creature, capable of severing parts of its own body like a lizard to escape, found even that option blocked by a dark curse.

[Gu…rrk…Creeeak…]

Desperate, the wounded serpent made one last attempt to retaliate, charging straight at Theresia in a bid to take her down with it. Its massive jaws opened wide, aiming to swallow her whole.

“Your summon—!” Stella shouted in alarm, her eyes darting to me.

But I remained calm, watching the lake with an unshaken gaze.

“What are you doing!? Your summon just got swallowed! If she drowns in the lake—!”

“Wait,” I said.

“Wait?” Stella’s eyes widened in disbelief.

“Do you even care about your summon? Everyone’s worried about you—”

“Look.”

Stella, still fuming, turned her gaze to the lake.

The water was bubbling—not from the serpent or air pockets, but as if it were boiling.

‘Is it overheating?’

The entire lake seemed to boil like coolant in a machine on the verge of exploding.

Before she could process it, the serpent erupted from the water, thrashing violently.

[Keek!]

Its vocal cords had somehow regenerated in a short time, but it couldn’t endure the pain of its body burning from within.

With a final desperate leap, it collapsed onto the shore.

A glowing sword burst through its neck—a victorious end to the battle.
