Chapter 55: Points (part 1)

Stella, upon hearing the word “Two Legs,” began to stare at me with cold eyes.

Of course, she wasn’t my fiancée, nor was she dating me. Yet the mere mention of “Two Legs” seemed to disgust her considerably.

“Ian? Two Legs… What was she talking about?”

“I don’t know either…”

I protested vehemently, yet she continued to look at me with suspicion. Honestly, it was embarrassing. Two Legs? I didn’t have even one! Even if I had tried to get myself a leg, no one would would give it to a dirt poor man.

“… Just who was that person?”

“Yes?”

“Looking at how she just disappeared, and her clothes, she seemed like a witch, right?”

“She was a witch, yes,” I replied.

However, the person in question wasn’t just a witch—she was my summon. Fortunately, Stella didn’t seem to realize that fact.

Well, summons were usually some kind of beast, but all of mine happened to be humanoid. Rather than suspecting I had summoned a humanoid, it was more reasonable for her to think I had met a wandering witch by chance.

“What’s your relationship with her?”

“Uh… we just met?”

“What’s her name? I should go and ask myself.”

“… You wouldn’t be able to meet her easily.”

“Why not?”

I couldn’t exactly tell her, ‘Because she’s sleeping on the back of my hand.’

Stella, however, seemed to accept my silence with a nod.

“Got it. So, that woman is your lover, right? Did she misunderstand us?”

“Uh, huh?”

“… Then go apologize to your lover,” Stella said briskly before disappearing.

I stared after her retreating figure.

[Oh, did that make her mad…sorry?]

The Empress’s voice echoed in my head. She apologized in a remorseful tone, as if she genuinely felt sorry.

It was already too late to clear up the misunderstanding.

The next day, as I entered the classroom, Syrah spotted me and came rushing over.

Before I could react, she tackled me with her entire body.

Avoiding it wasn’t an option, so I braced myself and accepted the impact.

“Hap—!”

“Ian!”

She clung to me, wrapping herself around my back like a snake. She began babbling like an excited child.

“Hey! How could you let her do that!?”

“I didn’t want to let her fall.”

“You could have stopped her, Ian!”

Syrah showed no intention of coming down from my back, earning us curious stares from our classmates.

While I knew this was entirely Syrah’s behavior, their gazes seemed to silently ask, ‘What on earth are you doing?’

‘I wish I could get out of this.’

Unfortunately, her grip was surprisingly adept, making it difficult to shake her off. Forcing her down might hurt her, and I wasn’t cruel enough to risk that.

Resigned, I walked to my seat with her still on my back. When we arrived, Syrah, as if suddenly bored, dismounted with a playful grin.

“Ian, Ian.”

She plopped into her seat, then patted her lap, motioning for me to lie down.

“I’ll give you a knee pillow. Lie here.”

“I don’t need it.”

“Hurry.”

Without waiting for my consent, she tugged at my robe and guided my head onto her thighs.

It felt improper to lie so openly in a classroom, especially with everyone watching. Yet, there was a strange comfort in her lap, which felt inexplicably soft and soothing.

“Class is starting… Ian, refrain from such behavior in the classroom,” Oliver said sternly as he entered.

“… Yes,” I muttered, sitting upright and regaining my composure.

When I glanced at Syrah, she was already humming innocently, pretending as though nothing had happened.

Oliver stood at the academy’s lectern, writing something on the blackboard as he began the class.

“All summoners can only summon one summon. Does anyone know why?”

“It hasn’t been identified yet,” someone answered.

“Exactly. It hasn’t been studied or understood yet,” Oliver confirmed.

The prevailing academic theory was that summons were linked to the heavens. As such, studying them was akin to interpreting divine power, which the church vehemently opposed.

Of course, this didn’t stop people from conducting secret research behind the scenes…

‘But it’s still pointless.’

Delving into the secrets of summoning was effectively the same as studying summoners themselves.
