Song Qingshu looked down and saw a man with square eyes and a broad nose, exuding a fierce aura.
A long scar near his eyes stood out, a mark famous in the capital. Song Qingshu had heard tales of himârumors said the scar came from saving Jin Emperor Xizong from an assassin years ago.
âWanyan Tesi, what kind of Palace Guard Commander are you? An assassin infiltrated the Empressâs chambers and even dared attack me openly!â King Wei roared, pointing at the wound on his face.
Wanyan Tesi knelt, cold sweat dripping. âI beg Your Highnessâs forgiveness, and the Empressâs too. This female assassinâs martial arts were too formidable. We gathered many experts and even called the Grand Steward to wound her gravely. We thought sheâd fled in the chaos, but whoâd expect her to be so bold as to stay in the palaceâŚâ
âForgiveness?â King Wei fumed. âSuch a grave mistake, and you think âforgivenessâ suffices? If Iâd been harmed today, how many lives could you offer? Guards, drag Wanyan Tesi out and give him eighty heavy strikes!â
The crowd exchanged glances. Eighty strikes would kill an ordinary man. Even with Wanyan Tesiâs martial skills, itâd cost him half his life. More crucially, as Palace Guard Commander and overseer of the capitalâs forbidden army, his status was no small matterâhardly someone to be punished so casually.
Seeing no one move, King Wei sneered, âWhat, planning to rebel? Ignoring my commands now?â
With no way to resolve this, Wanyan Tesi stood firm. âForgive my insolence, but I answer directly to the Emperor, not others. Iâll give Your Highness an explanation for today, but now I must pursue the assassin. Iâll take my leave!â
Fury simmered in Wanyan Tesiâs heart. With his rank, who in the capital didnât treat him with respect? Yet today, a wet-behind-the-ears prince humiliated him so!
He knew well he was the Emperorâs confidant. King Wei had tried to win him over multiple times, but Wanyan Tesi remained loyal, aligning closer to the Emperorâs brother, King Changsheng, Wanyan Yuanâa rival of King Wei. Naturally, King Wei harbored resentment and likely seized this chance to eliminate him. Wanyan Tesi wouldnât sit idly by. Heâd navigate this crisis, and once word reached the Emperor or King Changsheng, theyâd protect him.
Watching the clash between Wanyan Tesi and King Wei, Empress Pei Man stood nearby, her face expressionless, but a slight upturn at her lips betrayed her true mood: ‘Let them fightâthe bigger the chaos, the better.’
âInsolent!â King Wei pulled an object from his robes and raised it high. âWanyan Tesi, you think only Father Emperor can judge you? Open your wretched eyes and see what this is!â
‘That sh!t is blinding my eyes!’ Song Qingshu, hidden on a beam above, winced at the glint of the golden token in King Weiâs hand.
The crowd saw it clearly and paled, dropping to their knees. âLong live our Emperor, ten thousand years!â
Even Empress Pei Man rose to salute, startling Song Qingshu. He peered at the palm-sized golden token, engraved with âAs if I Were Presentâ in large characters, flanked by smaller, curling Jurchen script he couldnât read.
âThese Jurchens adopt Han customs quickly, even âAs if I Were Present,ââ Song Qingshu muttered to himself. He never understood why a mere token held such powerâagainst a true rebel, even the Emperor himself might fall to a single blade.
With even the Empress kneeling before him, King Weiâs face gleamed with pride. âGuards, drag Wanyan Tesi out for eighty heavy strikes!â
âYes!â No soldier dared refuse now, stepping forward to seize Wanyan Tesi. He shook them off with a surge of energy.
âWanyan Tesi, do you dare rebel?â King Wei bellowed.
From the beam, Song Qingshu shook his head. Heâd already sensed the riftâKing Wei clearly targeted Wanyan Tesi, using this incident to strike. But to Song Qingshu, the princeâs actions seemed childish, mere venting with no gain. Instead, heâd fully provoked a heavyweight like Wanyan Tesi. A seasoned politician would either refrain or go all in. With that token, King Wei couldâve branded Wanyan Tesi a traitor the moment he resisted, executing him on the spot to end all threats. Instead, he just flaunted his power, sowing endless trouble.
Wanyan Tesiâs expression flickered, but he snorted, âNo need to drag meâIâll walk myself.â He turned and followed the enforcers out.
After dealing with Wanyan Tesi, King Wei faced Empress Pei Man coldly. âYour Majesty, the guards outside your chambers failed to notice an assassinâs entry. Such negligence demands a change.â
Before she could respond, he continued, âGuards, arrest all the Taihe Hall guards on duty today and throw them in the dungeon. Replace all the maids and eunuchs here tooâ Iâll personally select their replacements.â
Empress Pei Manâs face tightened. âIâm accustomed to my personal attendants. They know my habits and serve me well. No need for Your Highness to trouble yourself.â
King Wei gave her a long look, then chuckled. âHow could I refuse Your Majestyâs small request?â
Song Qingshu mused silently: ‘Not entirely incompetent. Heâs swapped Taihe Hallâs guards for his own men. The Empress, caught off-guard by the assassin, can only yield. From now on, Taihe Hall is under his thumbâevery move she makes, heâll know.’
âIâll check on that wretch Wanyan Tesi and wonât disturb Your Majestyâs rest.â King Wei, triumphant, strutted out, his steps light. The two stunning maids heâd eyed earlier? After the assassinâs chaos, his interest waned. With Taihe Hall now his, those maids would be his soon enoughâno rush.
After King Wei left, Song Qingshu lingered on the beam, hoping to glean something useful from the Empress. But, wary of King Weiâs men, she revealed nothing.
Finding no value, Song Qingshu slipped away amid Taihe Hallâs bustle. Leaving the hall, he hesitated but decided to check Xiao Xingguoâs quarters.
As expected, the yellow robed woman had returned. Song Qingshu grumbled inwardlyâ’Does she think this is her home?’ Good thing he wasnât truly a eunuch, or hiding an assassin would cost his ânine clansâ dearly.
âYou⌠howâd you get out?â The yellow robed woman leaned against the bedpost, her face bloodless. Seeing Song Qingshu, she froze in shock.
âHeroine, youâve got no conscience,â Song Qingshu teased, moving to sit on the bed. Her glare stopped him, so he grabbed a stool instead. âLucky for me, Taihe Hall was in chaos, so I slipped out. If theyâd found I brought the assassin, ten heads wouldnât save me.â
Guilt flashed across her face. âI planned to rescue you once things calmed, but you escaped on your own⌠Wait, didnât I seal your acupoints?â Suspicion clouded her eyes.
Song Qingshu replied calmly, âNo idea. My lower back tingled suddenly, and I could move again.â
âThere mustâve been another expert in the hall,â she said, her earlier doubts confirmed. âNo idea if theyâre friend or foe.â
Song Qingshu laughed. âYou said they helped you escape, so theyâre likely not an enemy.â
âTrue,â she nodded. âI wondered if they were the Empressâs men, but since they freed you, probably notâŚâ
âHeroine, worry about yourself first,â Song Qingshu cut in. âYour face is paler than a month-long great aunt. If you donât recover soon, you might not last.â
âWith me gone, youâd be thrilledâno one to boss you around,â she said, coughing mid-sentence. âBy the way, whatâs âgreat auntâ?â
âUh, it means a wound that bleeds endlessly,â Song Qingshu dodged, switching topics. âIâd hate for you to die. If you do, whoâll unseal my death acupoints? Iâd have to join you.â
âYouâre a bold little eunuch,â she teased with a smile. âDonât worry. Once Iâm healed, Iâll free your acupoints and stop forcing you. Sigh, weâre both just pitiful soulsâŚâ
Song Qingshu smirked inwardly. ‘Stunning beauty, top-tier martial arts, and youâre playing pitiful to a broken eunuch? Dramatic much?’
Drip, dripâŚ
âWhatâs that sound?â Song Qingshu glanced behind her.
âI took an arrow,â she admitted after a long pause. âI canât reach my back. Please help me.â
