Chapter 24: Lumentium XIII (Part 1)

The reason was unknown, but Aria was refusing to heal Lucian.

A priestess who was supposed to provide equal opportunity of healing to all people. A devout follower of the Goddess, who had laid down everything worldly, refused to heal others!

There was no grandiose reason, but simply a very personal reason of ‘I don’t want to do it.’ Not anywhere else, but in a public place like a banquet hall where there were countless ears to hear.

“…..”

‘She’s…completely crazy.’

Up until now, I was a little hesitant to believe it, but now I could be sure.

Today’s Ariel seemed to have lost her usual graceful character somewhere. Or maybe it was her original character from the start. That’s a completely valid possibility now that I think about it.

Of course, I wasn’t naive enough to believe that old-fashioned notion of ‘priests should impart their divine healing fairly to all people.’

Divine power was a power derived from the Goddess, but the subjects who actually exercised that power wer a human beings.

As long as the priests were also human, and as long as they lived their lives in the society with other humans, it was an obvious thing that the exercise of divine power could not be equally distributed to all living things.

To put it bluntly, being a priest didn’t earn you money, and you couldn’t just live on only drinking dew like the elves, could you? Well, being an elf also didn’t mean that you really could live only on dew.

Anyway, what I wanted to say was this: as demonstrated by the event where the Princess couldn’t force Ariel to bow her head, the priests were closely related to worldly power and social standing. They paid more attention to them than one might think.

For example, if nobles and commoners visited a temple at the same time, the nobles were healed first, and if the nobles held a consecration ceremony, the priests put everything aside and participated in the blessing.

However, I had no intention of blaming them for that.

Because I, who was actually thinking in such a way, was also a part of that privileged class. There was nothing more disgusting than a man who had always enjoyed all the advantage, and then complained about the privilege. That would make me a hypocrite.

Anyways, even among the priests, Aria was a woman who stood in the representative position of the priesthood. Although she had not received the title of ‘Saintess’ at this point, Aria had become one of the representative figures of the church due to the immense divine power she possessed from birth and the authority bestowed by the goddess.

In other words, it meant that there was a lot of concern that Ariel’s words could be misunderstood as the will of the entire church.

To sum it up in a word, it would be a an insane matter if she refused to heal someone for personal reasons.

Unknowingly, my face turned pale, and I quickly looked around. Fortunately, no one seemed to have heard Ariel’s bombastic remarks from earlier.

I glanced at Lucian, who was sleeping spread out on the floor, unaware of the things happening around him.

What did this guy do wrong to make the words ‘I don’t want to heal you’ come out of Ariel’s mouth?

‘…did this guy ever commit blasphemy in the past?’

As I remembered, Saintess Ariel was a compassionate woman who wanted to help even if it meant delaying the group’s advance if there were people in need, even while we were hurrying to the north.

‘To incur the hatred of such a woman, is he an idiot who doesn’t even know that if a woman harbors resentment, there will be frost in May?’

I looked down at Lucian, who didn’t even know how a woman’s heart worked, and clicked my tongue in annoyance.

“…I guess it can’t be helped.”

The best scenario would be to have Ariel heal him, but if she refused to heal, shouldn’t I be the one to do it? It would be a nuisance to the attendants if he keeps sprawled on the floor of the banquet hall like a bag of discarded garbage.

“Cain, do you also know how to heal?”

“A little bit…I guess.”

Before the regression, it was something I had to learn while following behind the four women who were much stronger than me. To be more precise, should I say it was a desperate struggle to avoid causing trouble to those women?

Even if I didn’t know much, it should be enough to wake up an idiot lying on the floor.

After being beaten by the Princess every day, it was the ‘treatment’ she gave me in the end.

And so, after placing my hand neatly on the side of Lucian’s heart, I focused the ‘flow’ on my fingertips.

Badump!
