“Locating by sound?” I paused, already aware of what it meant, but curious about how Long Qingyang planned to train me. If I mastered this skill, I could have easily dodged those iron pellets earlier.
Long Qingyang ignored my reaction and waved at the six special forces soldiers. “Bring me what I asked you to prepare this morning!”
“Yes, sir!” The six soldiers responded in unison, each retrieving a target and holding a dart in hand.
Wait, are they planning to throw those at me? Long Qingyang’s ideas were getting more absurd by the day.
“Do you remember my instructions from this morning?” Long Qingyang asked the soldiers calmly.
The six soldiers straightened up and shouted in unison, “Yes, sir!”
“Let me demonstrate. Watch carefully!” Long Qingyang said, taking out a black cloth to blindfold himself.
Five of the soldiers then surrounded Long Qingyang, each holding up a target. Long Qingyang took a dart from one of them and said, “Begin.”
One soldier standing outside the circle threw a dart with incredible speed. The moment it left his hand, Long Qingyang moved. With a sweep of his robe, he knocked the incoming dart to the ground, just as his own dart hit the bullseye.
Whoa! Was this some kind of staged act? Locating by sound usually required hearing the sound before determining the location. I hadn’t expected Long Qingyang to be this skilled!
“Did you see that?” Long Qingyang removed his blindfold and looked at me.
I hesitated, then forced a grim smile. “Master, this is way too difficult!”
“You don’t need to be exactly like me. Just aim for whichever target I hit,” Long Qingyang said, tossing the black cloth to me. I caught it without a word.
Locating by sound… I could barely hit the target with my eyes open, and now he wanted me to throw with a blindfold on? I silently prayed that these soldiers had good luck.
“All right, let’s do this!” Though I felt unprepared, I couldn’t let Long Qingyang look down on me.
A sharp “whoosh” filled the air as soon as I finished speaking, followed by a “thud” as the dart hit a target. I could estimate the general direction but couldn’t pinpoint the exact location—Long Qingyang’s skill was just too far ahead of mine.
I gritted my teeth and threw my dart toward the direction I guessed. I heard a muffled grunt, then silence. Damn it! It looked like I’d missed the target.
“Again!” I shouted, unwilling to give up.
Long Qingyang threw another dart, and, just as before, I threw mine after it. Another grunt followed. Was my luck really this bad?
After about ten attempts, as I prepared to throw again, Long Qingyang suddenly said, “Enough.”
“Oh.” I took off the blindfold, looking around to see if I’d hit any targets. To my surprise, each soldier wore a pained expression, and all the targets were filled with red darts—none of which were mine.
My darts were blue, while Long Qingyang’s were red. Unfortunately, all my blue darts were embedded in the soldiers themselves.
I closed my eyes, sighed, and said, “Sorry, guys.”
When I opened my eyes, I noticed one soldier who didn’t have a single blue dart on him. I walked over, patted him on the shoulder, and smiled. “Nice job, man. You’re pretty lucky!”
Unexpectedly, the soldier’s eyes filled with tears. “Lucky my ass!” he muttered, turning to reveal two blue darts sticking straight out of his rear.
“Uh, they look… quite nice!” I forced a laugh. “I’m just going to step out for a bit!” I quickly left, afraid the soldiers might gang up on me later.
I picked up my phone from the table to check the time, noticing over a dozen missed calls, all from Zhang Yu. I’d had my phone on silent for training.
I went to the window and called him back.
“What’s up, you idiot?” I greeted him with a teasing tone as he answered.
Zhang Yu ignored my remark. “What the hell, man! I’ve been calling you like crazy! Why didn’t you pick up?”
I chuckled awkwardly. “I was working!”
“Where are you working? Most places aren’t hiring summer temps now,” he said.
“At a restaurant, just helping out,” I replied. “Not like I can find anything better!”
“Working at a restaurant barely pays anything! You’d make more hauling bricks with me on a construction site,” Zhang Yu scoffed.
I sighed, then asked, “Did you call just to ask where I’m working?”
“Oh, right. What’s your bank card number?” Zhang Yu continued, “My mom’s condition has worsened, and she needs surgery. My money from bricklaying isn’t enough…”
“The password is your birthday,” I said. I’d already told him the password before.
Zhang Yu laughed. “You idiot, you really used my birthday as your password? Admit it—you must like me or something!”
“Yeah, right! I like women, okay?” I teased him. “Hurry up and withdraw the money, and get your mom treated.”
“I’m doing it now!” Zhang Yu replied, then suddenly shouted, “What the heck! Sixty thousand? You didn’t rob a bank, did you?”
Sixty… sixty thousand? I knew Zhang Peng’s card wouldn’t be empty, but I never expected it to have that much.
“Of course not! I told you, it’s just a bonus I received!” I replied, trying to sound nonchalant.
“Sixty thousand as a bonus? You think I’m a three-year-old?” he retorted.
“Fine, I’ll come clean. I’m actually a rich, handsome guy!” I sighed dramatically.
Zhang Yu laughed. “Yeah, right. If you’re a rich, handsome guy, then I must be your dad!”
“Forget where it came from. It’s a gift from your brother, take it or leave it!” I said firmly.
Zhang Yu fell silent, then replied, “I always knew you weren’t an ordinary guy. I don’t know why you’re keeping secrets from me and Fatty, but no matter who you are, you’re still my brother. I’ll pay you back eventually.”
“Forget about paying me back. Just get your mom the surgery,” I said, ending the call.
I sighed. Zhang Yu had sensed something, but thankfully, he hadn’t connected it to Zhang Peng. I’d handled it well enough.
“Hey, get back here for training!” Long Qingyang’s voice called out just as I hung up.
Shaking my head with a sigh, I returned to the training room.
But when I arrived, the sight left me stunned. The special forces soldiers were now suited up in helmets and bulletproof vests. What was Long Qingyang planning?
