Theresia, who had torn the skin off the sea snake’s neck, thrust her burning sword directly into the monster’s head.
A sizzling sound erupted, accompanied by the smell of cooking meat, as the monster’s form dissolved into nothingness. The flames that had engulfed Theresia gradually subsided, leaving only wisps of smoke curling into the air.
“…I’m a little tired,” she murmured.
“Good work,” Ian said casually.
“Yes, Master. I’ll just head back and rest.”
Ian sent Theresia back without much ado, then turned his attention to the items left behind by the demon. Like the monsters they had hunted earlier, it provided an additional 30 minutes of time.
“Stella,” Ian called.
“…What?”
“Let’s finish this test today.”
He held up a radar device that displayed the locations of other cadets.
***
Beep-beep-beep…
As the cadets drew closer, the radar began to sound louder.
Ian scanned the surroundings, although no one was visible to the naked eye. He knew cadets were nearby.
“Salamander.”
Responding to Ian’s signal, Stella summoned the Salamander to monitor the area. While one could hide their appearance, it was impossible to mask heat signatures.
Cadets hidden in the infrared field were promptly incinerated by the Salamander’s flames.
The beep of the radar confirmed their elimination, and Stella’s score increased.
Ian, however, didn’t mind—she had already promised to let him claim victory in the end.
“Next?” Ian asked.
“Next…there are quite a few,” Stella said hesitantly. “It might be dangerous.”
“It’s fine. There are three of us, so what’s there to fear?”
Ian reassured Senior Dinua, who had been looking around anxiously. They headed in the direction of the beeping signals. Sure enough, more than a dozen indicators appeared, moving apart slightly. It seemed there was an observation-type summon among their opponents, as the signals suddenly scattered to encircle them.
A group of 1-star to 2-star Summoners would only disadvantage themselves by spreading out, Ian thought. He waited patiently for the encirclement to complete.
Moments later, a giant Colossus emerged.
“Huh? Ian?”
“…Noah and Syrah?”
“Hi!”
Noah and Syrah, seated on the Colossus’s shoulder, waved lightly at Ian.
Ian sighed in relief.
While Syrah was unpredictable, Noah was approachable and might agree to his request. Raising his hands to show he meant no harm, Ian said, “First, I want to talk.”
“Talk? Fine. But hand over your artifacts first, then we’ll listen,” Syrah said with a smirk.
“…Are you saying that without even knowing what I want to discuss?”
“Oh, I know. But isn’t this how negotiations between equals work?” Syrah gestured around them.
Numerous cadets had surrounded Ian’s group, their summons poised to attack.
“There are three 3-star Summoners here,” Ian noted calmly.
“We’ve got two on our side. Besides…”
Syrah reached into her pocket and pulled out a small object. Ian’s eyes widened in alarm.
“A gun!?”
Reacting instinctively, he ducked.
Stella and Dinua, unfamiliar with the weapon, looked at him in confusion.
“Watch out!”
Bang!
With a sharp pop, the gun discharged a projectile. The shot was impossibly fast—closer to the speed of light than sound—and struck Stella.
Beep!
Stella’s artifact emitted a loud alarm. She stared at it in shock. “My summons…they’re disabled!”
“…What?” Ian muttered.
Syrah laughed, clearly amused. “We hunted sea snakes to get radar. We also hunted monsters and secured special items, just like this.”
“Two against two now,” Syrah taunted. “And we’ve got plenty of 1-star and 2-star Summoners here.”
Realizing things were unfolding according to Syrah’s plan, Ian glared at her. She smiled and extended her hand.
“Hand over your artifact, Ian. Surrender, and I’ll let you go.”
“Let me guess—you can’t fire that gun too often?” Ian said.
“Exactly. It has a one-hour recharge time and lasts ten minutes. But knowing that won’t help you stop us.”
“Noah, how about betraying Syrah and joining us?” Ian asked, casting a hopeful glance at her.
Noah sighed apologetically. “Ian…my artifact belongs to Syrah too. Even if I betrayed her, I’d lose everything.”
While Ian’s plan to recruit Noah had failed, he was at least certain she wouldn’t join the fight.
“It’s 2-to-1 now?” Syrah teased, swinging her legs over the Colossus’s shoulder.
“Ahahaha! This is too fun.”
At her command, the surrounding cadets unleashed their summons. Dozens of beasts materialized, alongside Syrah’s 3-star summon, which growled menacingly.
Ian quickly calculated the situation. They targeted Stella because she has a 4-star summon.
Stella alone could have overwhelmed everyone present, but Syrah had neutralized that threat.
“Theresia,” Ian called mentally.
[Yes, Master?]
“Are you ready?”
[Of course.]
Syrah didn’t know about Ian’s second summon, Theresia, the leader of the Order of the Phoenix.
“This will be her debut,” Ian thought with a grin.
With a fiery burst, angelic wings spread wide, and the ashes scatter.
Syrah’s confident smirk froze into astonishment.

Funny how Syrah grew. Both in character and for me.
