âLocating by sound?â I paused, already aware of what it meant, but curious about how Long Qingyang planned to train me. If I mastered this skill, I could have easily dodged those iron pellets earlier.
Long Qingyang ignored my reaction and waved at the six special forces soldiers. “Bring me what I asked you to prepare this morning!”
âYes, sir!â The six soldiers responded in unison, each retrieving a target and holding a dart in hand.
Wait, are they planning to throw those at me? Long Qingyangâs ideas were getting more absurd by the day.
âDo you remember my instructions from this morning?â Long Qingyang asked the soldiers calmly.
The six soldiers straightened up and shouted in unison, âYes, sir!â
“Let me demonstrate. Watch carefully!” Long Qingyang said, taking out a black cloth to blindfold himself.
Five of the soldiers then surrounded Long Qingyang, each holding up a target. Long Qingyang took a dart from one of them and said, âBegin.â
One soldier standing outside the circle threw a dart with incredible speed. The moment it left his hand, Long Qingyang moved. With a sweep of his robe, he knocked the incoming dart to the ground, just as his own dart hit the bullseye.
Whoa! Was this some kind of staged act? Locating by sound usually required hearing the sound before determining the location. I hadnât expected Long Qingyang to be this skilled!
âDid you see that?â Long Qingyang removed his blindfold and looked at me.
I hesitated, then forced a grim smile. âMaster, this is way too difficult!â
âYou donât need to be exactly like me. Just aim for whichever target I hit,â Long Qingyang said, tossing the black cloth to me. I caught it without a word.
Locating by sound⌠I could barely hit the target with my eyes open, and now he wanted me to throw with a blindfold on? I silently prayed that these soldiers had good luck.
âAll right, letâs do this!â Though I felt unprepared, I couldnât let Long Qingyang look down on me.
A sharp âwhooshâ filled the air as soon as I finished speaking, followed by a âthudâ as the dart hit a target. I could estimate the general direction but couldnât pinpoint the exact locationâLong Qingyangâs skill was just too far ahead of mine.
I gritted my teeth and threw my dart toward the direction I guessed. I heard a muffled grunt, then silence. Damn it! It looked like Iâd missed the target.
âAgain!â I shouted, unwilling to give up.
Long Qingyang threw another dart, and, just as before, I threw mine after it. Another grunt followed. Was my luck really this bad?
After about ten attempts, as I prepared to throw again, Long Qingyang suddenly said, âEnough.â
âOh.â I took off the blindfold, looking around to see if Iâd hit any targets. To my surprise, each soldier wore a pained expression, and all the targets were filled with red dartsânone of which were mine.
My darts were blue, while Long Qingyangâs were red. Unfortunately, all my blue darts were embedded in the soldiers themselves.
I closed my eyes, sighed, and said, âSorry, guys.â
When I opened my eyes, I noticed one soldier who didnât have a single blue dart on him. I walked over, patted him on the shoulder, and smiled. âNice job, man. Youâre pretty lucky!â
Unexpectedly, the soldierâs eyes filled with tears. âLucky my ass!â he muttered, turning to reveal two blue darts sticking straight out of his rear.
âUh, they look⌠quite nice!â I forced a laugh. âIâm just going to step out for a bit!â I quickly left, afraid the soldiers might gang up on me later.
I picked up my phone from the table to check the time, noticing over a dozen missed calls, all from Zhang Yu. Iâd had my phone on silent for training.
I went to the window and called him back.
âWhatâs up, you idiot?â I greeted him with a teasing tone as he answered.
Zhang Yu ignored my remark. âWhat the hell, man! Iâve been calling you like crazy! Why didnât you pick up?â
I chuckled awkwardly. âI was working!â
âWhere are you working? Most places arenât hiring summer temps now,â he said.
âAt a restaurant, just helping out,â I replied. âNot like I can find anything better!â
âWorking at a restaurant barely pays anything! Youâd make more hauling bricks with me on a construction site,â Zhang Yu scoffed.
I sighed, then asked, âDid you call just to ask where Iâm working?â
âOh, right. Whatâs your bank card number?â Zhang Yu continued, âMy momâs condition has worsened, and she needs surgery. My money from bricklaying isnât enoughâŚâ
âThe password is your birthday,â I said. Iâd already told him the password before.
Zhang Yu laughed. âYou idiot, you really used my birthday as your password? Admit itâyou must like me or something!â
âYeah, right! I like women, okay?â I teased him. âHurry up and withdraw the money, and get your mom treated.â
âIâm doing it now!â Zhang Yu replied, then suddenly shouted, âWhat the heck! Sixty thousand? You didnât rob a bank, did you?â
Sixty⌠sixty thousand? I knew Zhang Pengâs card wouldnât be empty, but I never expected it to have that much.
âOf course not! I told you, itâs just a bonus I received!â I replied, trying to sound nonchalant.
âSixty thousand as a bonus? You think Iâm a three-year-old?â he retorted.
âFine, Iâll come clean. Iâm actually a rich, handsome guy!â I sighed dramatically.
Zhang Yu laughed. âYeah, right. If youâre a rich, handsome guy, then I must be your dad!â
âForget where it came from. Itâs a gift from your brother, take it or leave it!â I said firmly.
Zhang Yu fell silent, then replied, âI always knew you werenât an ordinary guy. I donât know why youâre keeping secrets from me and Fatty, but no matter who you are, youâre still my brother. Iâll pay you back eventually.â
âForget about paying me back. Just get your mom the surgery,â I said, ending the call.
I sighed. Zhang Yu had sensed something, but thankfully, he hadnât connected it to Zhang Peng. Iâd handled it well enough.
âHey, get back here for training!â Long Qingyangâs voice called out just as I hung up.
Shaking my head with a sigh, I returned to the training room.
But when I arrived, the sight left me stunned. The special forces soldiers were now suited up in helmets and bulletproof vests. What was Long Qingyang planning?
