Chapter 13: Old Friends Reunited

Captain Niu walked out of the interrogation room with Zuo Si, who felt somewhat unsettled. Although the matter seemed to be over, he couldn’t shake the feeling that something was off.

Why did Lu Liangyuan confess so readily to all his crimes, even admitting to the case from fifteen years ago?

Zuo Si thought, ‘Just the murder of Hero Ding is enough for him to spend the rest of his life in prison. It seems like admitting to other crimes doesn’t really change much.’

‘Could it be that he’s eager to die? Afraid that the charge of killing Hero Ding isn’t enough? So he deliberately confessed to the case from fifteen years ago to get the court to sentence him to death?’

Zuo Si shook his head, deciding not to dwell on it. How could an ordinary person understand the inner world of a madman?

For some reason, Lu Liangyuan’s sinister smile suddenly flashed through his mind, causing him to shiver.

“Captain Niu!” A soft female voice called from not far away, sounding as pleasant as flowing water.

Zuo Si looked up to see a beautiful girl in her twenties walking towards him. She wore heavy smoky eye makeup, but it wasn’t greasy. Her long eyelashes framed bright eyes that sparkled like stars.

Her wine-red wavy hair cascaded down her chest, and the loose light blue jumpsuit couldn’t hide her impressive curves.

‘She must be a girl who often goes to nightclubs,’ Zuo Si thought.

“Captain Niu, do you have any leads on my brother’s case?” The beautiful girl asked, her expression anxious. Despite her makeup, she still looked a bit tired.

Captain Niu nodded and said to Li Feng, “Xiao Li, take Zuo Si home. Remember to remind him not to go to those dangerous places casually in the future.”

“Yes, Captain Niu!” Li Feng nodded and gestured for Zuo Si to follow him.

Zuo Si glanced back occasionally, stealing looks at the beautiful girl.

He murmured, “This girl is really pretty. It would be great if she could be my girlfriend…”

Li Feng frowned and scolded, “If you want to find such a beautiful girlfriend, you should honestly find a job. Don’t waste your time on useless things all day!”

Zuo Si pouted, “What do you know? If I hit it big, I could earn thousands or even tens of thousands in a day!”

Li Feng laughed, “Do you really think I don’t understand your line of work? A bottom-tier live streamer like you doesn’t even have an operation team. You think you can make money? Dream on!”

Zuo Si was left speechless, feeling a bit helpless. How did the police know everything?

He had been live streaming for almost a month and had only received around seven hundred yuan in gifts last night, totaling just over eight hundred.

The live streaming platform took half, and he still had to pay taxes.

He ended up with just over three hundred…

Earning just over three hundred in a month made Zuo Si feel miserable when he thought about it.

He had to admit, it wasn’t easy in any profession.

Without resources and without support, the chances of becoming popular were slimmer than winning the lottery.

“Zuo Si, let me tell you, whether you continue live streaming or not, there’s one piece of advice you must remember.”

“Hmm, what is it, Brother Li?”

“Don’t choose your live streaming locations carelessly in the future. If you really encounter danger, it’ll be too late to regret it.”

Li Feng spoke earnestly, and Zuo Si couldn’t help but feel a bit touched.

“I understand, Brother Li. Don’t worry.”

Zuo Si could only agree verbally, as the places he would go in the future weren’t up to him to decide.

The black phone would tell him where to go for missions, and he had to go wherever it directed.

“Sigh, this One-star mission is already so terrifying. I can’t imagine how horrifying a One-and-a-half-star mission would be.”

Zuo Si thought to himself, feeling a headache coming on. After bidding farewell to Li Feng, he checked the time; it was already four in the afternoon.

His rented apartment was in the eastern suburbs, quite far from here, and he didn’t know when he would get home.

Just thinking about returning alone to that sparsely populated neighborhood sent a chill down his spine.

After last night’s scare, he didn’t want to be alone again tonight.

Zuo Si dialed his college classmate Lu Tao’s number.

He planned to crash at his place for the night.

In this day and age, it was hard for a poor guy to have friends, but coincidentally, both Lu Tao and Zuo Si were poor.

They got along well, had a decent relationship, often chatted, and would meet up every month to catch up and boast a little.

“Hey, what’s up?” Lu Tao’s nonchalant voice came through the phone.

“I’m in the southern suburbs now. I’m coming over to stay at your place for the night~”

“No way~ No way! My girlfriend is coming over tonight. If you come, you’ll just be a third wheel!~”

“Bro, you wouldn’t want to see me sleeping on the street, would you?”

“It’s not that I don’t want to help you, but I’ve been chasing this girl for half a year. She just agreed yesterday. If I bail tonight, you’ll be responsible for my happiness for the rest of my life!?!… Not talking about this anymore, I have to go pick her up from work. We’ll chat later…”

Beep… beep…

The phone went dead, and Zuo Si slapped his forehead, cursing this guy for being heartless when it came to women.

Stay at a hotel? It was the weekend, and hotels would probably be expensive.

Zuo Si only had a few hundred yuan in his pocket, so he had to save money.

“I’ll just stay at an internet café for the night. I can also check if there are any haunted houses for sale in Qingshui City.”

Zuo Si made up his mind and found the cheapest internet café to stay overnight.

The internet café was smoky and crowded with people smoking, and no one seemed to care. Zuo Si raised his hand to fan the air in front of his nose, feeling a bit disgusted.

But what could he do? It was cheap here.

He went up to the second floor, where there were fewer people than downstairs, and the air was slightly better.

He spotted a quiet corner by the window, where no one was sitting, and walked over.

On the chair, there was someone’s jacket thrown aside. Zuo Si didn’t reach for it but instead tapped the person on the shoulder and said, “Hey, could you please move your jacket?”

“What a pain…” The person didn’t turn around, still focused on his game, cursing under his breath in annoyance.

Zuo Si suddenly felt that the person’s back and voice were somewhat familiar. No, it should be very familiar!

“Lu Tao!”

What a coincidence, running into him right after hanging up the phone.

Lu Tao heard Zuo Si’s voice, and his hand holding the mouse froze. He stopped playing and slowly turned his stiff neck to look back.

“Zuo, Zuo, Zuo Si?! What are you doing here?”

“Don’t change the subject. Didn’t you say you were going to pick up your girlfriend?” Zuo Si said with a smile, teasing Lu Tao.

“Uh… uh…” Lu Tao thought for a moment, suddenly grabbed his jacket, stood up, and said, “Look at me, I forgot all about it while playing games. I’ll go now! Hehe!”

Zuo Si grabbed his wrist and pulled him back.

“Come on, stop pretending in front of me. You know your own worth. Don’t you realize it?”

Zuo Si rolled his eyes at Lu Tao, knowing that this guy was doing no better than himself.
