Chapter 23: Close to Ohana (part 1)

“Erm…a lap pillow?”

Wasn’t that something special people did?

Ohana smiled as I put on a puzzled expression.

“Now, now. Are you okay? My knees are so comfortable…?”

I couldn’t help but respond.

I quietly lay down on Ohana’s lap, resting my head on her legs. The close proximity felt strangely intimate.

Ohana’s face turned red.

“Ehehe… How are you feeling, Kim-kun?”

“Uh… Yeah, I don’t think it’s bad.”

“Erm, is that all you feel? Hmh….”

To be honest, I wasn’t sure how I felt. Even though she was just a childhood friend, Ohana was undeniably pretty—someone who could easily be called a beauty.

In a romantic comedy, her presence alone would be enough to validate the entire setup.

Was that why?

This situation felt strange.

Wasn’t this what youth was supposed to be?

Being trapped in a love comedy world, I never thought something like this would actually happen to me.

I could feel the soft texture of Ohana’s skin. She lightly tapped my head and said, “You’re nice, Kim-kun.”

“Are you treating me like a kid?”

“So, do you not like it?” Ohana grinned as she asked.

Common sense dictated that no man would dislike having a girl offer her lap as a pillow.

It was just that I had never experienced it before, so the situation left me dizzy.

I had spent my whole life juggling part-time jobs, never even holding a girl’s hand properly.

How could someone with zero experience with women stay composed in a situation like this?

Even if I had trained myself to remain calm, it wouldn’t have helped in a moment like this.

This sudden sweetness was enough to paralyze my brain.

“This is….”

“I… Kim-kun.”

“Ah! Uh, yes? What’s the matter? Tell me, Kamiyama.”

“I wish we could have a closer relationship now… That is… How about doing Yobisute, Kim-kun?”

“Yo—Yobisute?”  (G: Yobisute (呼び捨て) is a Japanese term that means calling someone by their name without using an honorific suffix.)

Once you get into this kind of situation, you’re stuck. I didn’t expect things to turn out like this.

Yobisute… She wanted us to call each other by our first names?

Deciding on a way to address each other…

I was curious, so I asked Ohana,

“Like how you talk to Natsuki?”

“Yeah, just like I talk to Ryu-chan.”

“Can I ask why you thought of that?”

I needed confirmation.

More than anything, there had been times when Ohana hadn’t heard me when I was talking to her.

Maybe she could hear me now.

“Well, that’s… Mmm.”

Ohana hesitated. I could tell she was embarrassed, but I needed to hear her answer.

“If we talked using Yobisute first, I thought it would help me know you better. So… again… I want to get to know you better.”

“Is that all? There must be another reason.”

When I questioned her further, she took a deep breath before speaking.

“The person who was nice to me… You were the second one, Kim-kun.”

Her voice trembled as if she was confessing something.

Was that so…?

No matter how much I loved the story, I could never fully understand every character’s perspective.

While Ryunosuke was with the heroine, the other heroines were also living their own lives.

Some heroines’ circumstances were easy to guess, but I never realized Ohana had gone through something like this.

Now that I thought about it, Ryunosuke had never given her a gift.

Aside from being the childhood friend who lived next door, her presence in the story had been nearly nonexistent.

I had been the one who approached Ohana first. I had simply done my best.

In a situation where I couldn’t save Amelia, I hadn’t even been able to win the hearts of the other heroines.

In the end, if this was a romantic comedy, I really hated the idea of ending up with just one person.

“Okay, then I’ll call you by your first name. Hana-chan.”

“Eh…? Huh? Really?”

“As long as you call me by my name, well… if you allow me, I can do that.”

If it would make her happy, I didn’t mind.

Ah, come to think of it—there was one more thing.

“Hana-chan.”

“Yeah? What is it, Kim-chan?”

“Kim… chan?”

“Ah, did that sound weird? I thought it was cute….”

Since Ohana was calling me by my first name, she had naturally added a suffix to it.

But there was a better way to address me.

“Since we agreed to do Yobisute, if possible, don’t call me that way. Just use my first name. My name is Hyunjin.”

“Ah, that’s a bit embarrassing… Then, Jin-chan….”

“…Yeah, that should be fine.”
