Chapter 49: Changing Seats

“Thank you,” Xu Xin said, standing up and walking a few steps. Seeing that she was really fine, she spoke to me.

I smiled, “We’re friends; no need to be so polite.”

Xu Xin seemed a bit disappointed by my words, “Just friends, huh…”

I didn’t know what to say. Cliché! So darn cliché! Hero saves the beauty, and the beauty promises herself to him—what kind of plot is that?

Of course, I had fantasized about this kind of scenario countless times. But now, Zhang Yu, my brother, had already taken an interest in her. I, Xia Tian, couldn’t be such a jerk.

How great would it have been if Zhang Yu hadn’t taken a liking to Xu Xin! Damn it! How could someone as loyal as me have such thoughts?

“I was just joking. Didn’t expect you to take it so seriously!” Xu Xin suddenly laughed, clutching her stomach.

I wiped the sweat from my forehead and sighed in relief, “A joke, huh!”

Xu Xin and I walked side by side down the avenue, bathed in the sunlight.

“Zhang Yu is a good guy. Have you really not considered it?” I asked Xu Xin once more.

Xu Xin shrugged helplessly, “High school life is about to end, and the pressure of studying is so high. At this time, I have no intention of dating.”

“That’s a pity,” I said, pretending to be regretful.

Xu Xin smiled, “Stop pretending. By the way, your girlfriend is quite nice.”

I knew she was talking about Mei’er. Hearing her words reminded me of the embarrassing first encounter with Mei’er.

“Well, look whose girlfriend she is!” I said proudly, even though Mei’er didn’t acknowledge being my girlfriend after learning what it meant.

“I’m heading back to the classroom. Let’s chat again sometime,” Xu Xin said, walking towards her class. I waved at her and headed towards my classroom.

However, I hesitated at the door. Damn it! This class was with Sister Qian. She had just forgiven me, and I didn’t know how to explain this time.

“Reporting!” After some thought, I mustered the courage to report. Surprisingly, Sister Qian wasn’t mad and let me sit down.

“I already got an excuse for you. No worries, but the class teacher seems off. Normally, if I made an excuse for you, she’d beat me with a textbook,” Zhang Yu said, using his book to cover his face.

“Thanks. Maybe the class teacher isn’t that bad!” I smiled and took out the textbook I hadn’t touched since it was distributed.

“How’s Xu Xin?” Zhang Yu glanced at Sister Qian, who was teaching, and asked.

“I sprayed some imported medicine on her, and she’s fine now,” I joked.

Zhang Yu scoffed, “In our school, imported stuff? Even if it’s imported, it’s made in China!” Then he looked serious, “Is Xu Xin really okay?”

“Yeah, she’s really fine,” I smiled wryly and asked, “Are you really interested in her? No jokes, be serious.”

Before Zhang Yu could answer, Fatty next to us leaned over, “Damn! Zhang Yu, that flirtatious guy, really interested in someone? Even if he is, it won’t last.”

“Mind your own business!” I pushed Fatty’s head back and looked at Zhang Yu.

Zhang Yu thought for a moment and smiled, “It’s not about liking. I just want to see if I can pursue the school beauty. How accomplished would that be!”

Damn it, Zhang Yu, are you kidding me? If I had agreed to Xu Xin earlier, what would have happened?

No, I already have Mei’er. That’s enough. A man shouldn’t be too greedy.

“Then why do you hesitate in front of her?” I suspected Zhang Yu was embarrassed and said so.

Zhang Yu laughed, “This is the latest pure-hearted guy’s method of flirting. You wouldn’t understand!”

“Then you don’t stand a chance!” Since Zhang Yu wasn’t serious, I naturally told him Xu Xin’s response.

“What? Are you going to betray our brotherhood and win her over?” Zhang Yu’s tone wasn’t great, but he still had that annoying smile.

I rolled my eyes, “Win her over, my ass! The school beauty has no intention of dating.”

“Then forget it, target someone else!” Zhang Yu chuckled and buried his head in his textbook, falling asleep.

Fatty, munching on chips, shrugged, “See? I know this idiot too well.”

“Just eat!” I kicked him, and he turned back to his chips.

I picked up the long-unseen textbook and started reading. Although I hadn’t looked at it for a while, I could still follow Sister Qian’s lecture. She even asked me a few questions, and luckily, I answered them. Otherwise, I’d be in real trouble.

Sister Qian had a rule: if you couldn’t answer her questions, you had to find a good student to get the answers after class and copy them ten times. Imagine translating a passage and failing—that’d be a nightmare.

When the bell rang, I sighed in relief. I passed this class with Sister Qian.

“Xia Tian, you did well this class. Switch seats with Zhao Kai,” Sister Qian said, looking at Zhao Kai in the third row.

“Teacher, as class monitor, it’s not appropriate for me to sit in the back,” Zhao Kai stood up before I could speak.

Zhao Kai was our class monitor, with excellent grades, always ranking first or second in the class and top five in the grade. We had little interaction since he never gave good students like us any face.

“Because you’re the class monitor, I’m moving you to the back to influence some students,” Sister Qian said, glancing at the sleeping Zhang Yu.

“But in the back, I’m afraid they’ll affect me,” Zhao Kai said anxiously.

“Don’t worry, Zhao Kai. I trust your determination,” Sister Qian smiled and clapped her hands, “Class dismissed!”

With nothing more to say, Zhao Kai packed his things to switch seats.

“Don’t forget to visit your brothers!” Fatty held my hand emotionally.

I kicked him, “Damn it! I’m not expelled. Why are you so emotional? And I’m not into guys!”

“Hurry up, are we switching or not?” Zhao Kai said impatiently, holding his things.

Seeing his smug face, I wanted to slap him. But I decided not to bother with him.

“Of course, I’ll switch!” I replied and walked to his old seat with my textbooks.

As I was about to sit down, the girl next to me whispered, “Zhao Kai stepped on the bench a few times. Don’t sit yet. I’ll get some tissues to wipe it.”

“Thanks!” Zhao Kai was annoying, but his desk mate was nice.

Finally, in high school, I got to sit with a girl!
