Chapter 56: Amnesia

“Sh!t! Why is it so cold? Did the school turn on the air conditioning early?” I was startled awake by a burst of cold air, still a bit groggy. “When did my bed get so hard?”

I opened my eyes and, holy crap! This wasn’t my dorm room. I was lying on the ground in just my underwear. What baffled me even more was that Mei’er was lying right next to me!

What the hell happened last night? The last thing I remember is going to the toilet, and then… nothing!

Sh!t! Did I fall asleep while squatting? But if I fell asleep, shouldn’t I still be in the toilet? And why is Mei’er in human form?

The more I thought about it, the more my head hurt. I tried to remember something, anything, but I couldn’t. Damn it, I think I have amnesia!

Calm down, I need to calm down. First, wake Mei’er and see what’s going on.

“Mei’er? Mei’er?” I gently patted her while calling her name softly.

Mei’er heard my call, opened her eyes in a daze, rubbed her eyes, and said, “Xia Tian?” Then she looked around, suddenly widened her eyes, “Why am I here? What is this place?”

Hearing this, my heart sank. Mei’er was just like me!

“Can you really not remember anything?” I asked, still holding onto a glimmer of hope.

Mei’er thought for a moment, then shook her head. “I only remember you looking for me, and then I fell asleep. When I woke up, I was here.”

I lost all hope. Mei’er had the same amnesia as I did… and we both lost an entire night of memories!

“Xia Tian, did something happen?” Mei’er asked, frowning in confusion.

I sighed and said helplessly, “I’m the same as you, I don’t remember anything.” Suddenly, I remembered that old man from before and quickly said to Mei’er, “Do you think a cultivator might have been here?”

“If they had come, they would have taken me away and re-sealed me. But I’m perfectly fine,” Mei’er refuted my idea.

“Forget it, forget it! I can’t remember anything anyway, and since neither of us are hurt, it doesn’t matter what happened last night.”

I had Mei’er transform back into the necklace and put it around my neck. I picked up my phone from the ground and checked the time. It was 5:07 AM. It was still early, so I decided to go back to the dorm and get some sleep.

Outside, it was raining. I shivered and hurried back to the dorm.

Everyone was still asleep, with Fatty snoring the loudest, drooling all over his pillow.

I lay on my bed, pulled the blanket over me, and soon drifted back to sleep.

I woke up again at 6:10 AM, roused by the roommate in the bunk above Fatty, who had already washed up and was leaving for work.

We had early reading at 6:20 AM. Fatty, Zhang Yu, and I quickly got dressed, splashed some water on our faces in the toilet, and ran to the classroom without even brushing our teeth. Fortunately, we weren’t late, though we just made it as the bell rang.

We walked to the back row together and saw Zhao Kai sitting there. I suddenly remembered that Sister Qian had asked me to switch seats with him, so I turned around and sat in my new seat.

I lazily yawned and was about to lay my head on the desk to sleep when Sun Jing called me up. “Get up and start reciting your lessons!”

“Just let me sleep for a bit, just a bit!” I stayed put on the desk.

“Sigh! It seems the class teacher’s expectations of you were in vain!” Sun Jing pretended to sigh helplessly.

I sat up, took out my textbook, and said to Sun Jing, “Fine, you win!” Then I opened the book and started reciting some ancient poems.

Sun Jing smiled sweetly beside me. “That’s more like it!”

With Sun Jing’s supervision, I spent the entire morning reciting my lessons. To my excitement, my memory had significantly improved. Although I wasn’t at the level of photographic memory, I could remember things completely after two or three readings. This must be due to refining the Primordial Spirit of Blood Fiend Ancestor.

The bell rang for the end of class. I was about to go have breakfast with Zhang Yu and Fatty when Sun Jing stopped me.

“Xia Tian, have you thought of a solution for yesterday’s problem?” Sun Jing asked with a worried look.

I smiled and unconsciously patted her head. “Don’t worry, it’ll be fine!” I quickly realized the intimate nature of my gesture and withdrew my hand.

Sun Jing blushed and then reverted to her worried expression. “Be careful. I’m going to have breakfast.”

“Okay, see you later!” I waved goodbye to Sun Jing and went to the cafeteria with Zhang Yu and Fatty.

Since the school became closed, the cafeteria business had boomed, but the quality of the food had deteriorated. Damn it, can’t they even peel the potatoes?

Unhappy with the food, I found an excuse to step outside and called Wang Tong.

“Did you get it done?” I was quite worried since Director Li’s favor was given for Qin Shousheng’s sake, not mine.

Wang Tong’s excited voice came through. “Young Master Xia, everything is settled. The police are on their way to make the arrests!” Wang Tong paused and continued, “Director Li had some personal ties with the principal and wanted to handle this privately, but the principal, who had his son late in life, doted on Chen Tianxiang and insisted on dragging you into this. So now it’s all out in the open, and that old guy’s reputation is ruined!”

Hearing Wang Tong’s words, I felt relieved. It seemed Director Li had indeed done me a favor. At the same time, Qin Shousheng’s identity became even more mysterious to me. I started to worry about who exactly I was protecting.

“Are you confident about getting the principal’s position?” Since Wang Tong had helped me out, I figured I should at least give him some benefits.

Wang Tong sounded even more cheerful. “Director Li knows it was you who asked me to handle this, so I’m already the designated principal. It’s just a matter of going through the formalities.”

“Okay, but once you’re principal, you need to manage the cafeteria properly. The food there is barely edible!” Thinking about the cafeteria’s food made me angry, though I said it half-jokingly.

“I’ll replace the cafeteria staff today!” Wang Tong’s response stunned me. Wow, a single sentence from me had decided the fate of those people. But I guess this was for the greater good.

After chatting with Wang Tong for a bit, I saw Zhang Yu and Fatty approaching, so I ended the call.

“Who were you talking to, all secretive?” Zhang Yu looked around, saw no teachers, and lit a cigarette. Lately, Zhang Yu’s smoking habit had gotten worse.

Fatty chimed in, “Were you talking to a girl?”

“I wish I were talking to a beautiful girl!” I glared at Fatty, then said, “It was my landlord, asking for rent.”

“Why don’t you move in with me? Staying alone isn’t very comfortable, and we’re mostly at school anyway, only going home for a couple of nights. Renting a place isn’t worth it. If my place is too small, you could stay at Fatty’s,” Zhang Yu suggested while smoking.

Fatty nodded in agreement. “Zhang Yu is right. Renting a place now is a waste.”

I hadn’t expected my casual lie to get such serious responses from Zhang Yu and Fatty.

I smiled, “It’s fine. The college entrance exam is in ten days. I’ll lose a bit of money, but I’ll need the place during the summer anyway.”

“Why don’t you go back home? I don’t understand why your parents let you live alone. Aren’t they worried?” Zhang Yu said, puzzled.

I hadn’t told Zhang Yu and Fatty about my parents’ passing. I didn’t want them to worry. In the school, probably only Sister Qian knew about my parents. Other teachers might have heard, but Sister Qian was likely the only one who remembered since I wasn’t someone of importance.

“I plan to get a summer job to earn some college tuition and gain experience.” I couldn’t tell them about training with Qin Shousheng, as it seemed more dangerous than I had initially thought.

“You, getting a job? What a joke!” Zhang Yu laughed and cursed.

I wasn’t pleased with his reaction. “Why look down on me!” We started to roughhouse, with Fatty siding with Zhang Yu, so I quickly lost.

As we were about to return to the classroom, police sirens sounded at the school gate. I looked up and saw a police car slowly driving into the campus.
