Because of Sun Jing, I had been listening attentively during class. Whenever I didn’t understand something, Sun Jing would explain it to me bit by bit after the teacher finished speaking. Time passed quickly, and before long, the second class was over.
After sitting for a while, I felt like I needed to use the restroom. I called Zhang Yu and Fatty to go with me.
“Damn it! I’m out of c!garettes!” Zhang Yu looked at the empty c!garette pack and cursed helplessly.
I laughed and said, “If you’re out, just don’t smoke. It’s not good for your health anyway.”
“You don’t understand. This stuff is my lifeline. I can’t go without it,” Zhang Yu said resignedly, as if he would really die without his c!garettes.
Fatty laughed and said, “Then hurry up and die, but leave all your money behind before you do.”
“Dammit! You always have something to say!” Zhang Yu pretended to kick Fatty, who quickly hid behind me.
“Stop messing around. Let’s see if there’s anyone smoking in the restroom and just grab one,” I said, smiling at them.
“Then hurry up!” Zhang Yu quickened his pace, and Fatty and I followed suit.
Just as we reached the restroom, we heard shouting and cursing from inside.
As soon as we entered, we saw Chen Tianxiang surrounded by three or four people, being kicked and punched.
“I was wrong before. Please, let me go!” Chen Tianxiang, huddled on the ground, was sobbing and sniffling, and I felt a bit sorry for him.
Just as I was about to intervene, Zhang Yu patted one of the attackers on the shoulder and said, “Do you guys have any c!garettes?”
“Can’t you see we’re busy? If you want c!garettes, go to the convenience store!” The guy glanced at Zhang Yu before returning to beating Chen Tianxiang.
Chen Tianxiang struggled to get up, pulled out a pack of soft Zhonghua c!garettes, and said to Zhang Yu, “I have some! I have some!”
“Damn! Good c!garettes!” Zhang Yu reached out to take them, but Chen Tianxiang said, “I’ll give you the whole pack, but you have to get me out of here!” He glanced nervously at the people around him.
When the others heard this, they all turned to look at Zhang Yu. One of the apparent leaders said, “Bro, he’s the principal’s son. He’s been bullying us ever since he transferred here. Now that his dad has been taken away, we’re just getting our revenge. I suggest you don’t get involved.”
Zhang Yu took a closer look at Chen Tianxiang, who had a bruised face and said, “Damn! So it’s you!”
Seeing me and Fatty, Chen Tianxiang shouted, “It’s you guys!” Then he pleaded with Zhang Yu, “It was all my fault yesterday. Please save me. I’ll give you the c!garettes!” He handed over the pack of soft Zhonghua, which Zhang Yu took.
“Bro, don’t listen to him. You have a grudge against him too. You wouldn’t help him just for a pack of c!garettes, would you?” The guy looked at Zhang Yu with suspicion.
Zhang Yu took out a c!garette and lit it. “His life or death has nothing to do with me!” he said, then turned and walked away.
Chen Tianxiang cried out, “You took my c!garettes, so you have to save me! You’re not keeping your word!”
Zhang Yu turned back and cursed, “Damn it! I never said I’d help you just because I took your c!garettes. Besides, you forced them on me. I’m not going to refuse them!” He then squatted by the restroom entrance, enjoying his c!garette.
Fatty and I exchanged looks and laughed. Zhang Yu was quite petty. Chen Tianxiang had beaten Fatty yesterday, and today he expected Zhang Yu to save him—what a joke.
After Zhang Yu finished his c!garette, we returned to the classroom together.
As we approached the classroom door, we saw Sister Qian standing alone on the podium, and the entire class was present. Wasn’t class supposed to have started yet?
“Report!” Zhang Yu and Fatty, realizing something was wrong, quickly hid behind me and pushed me forward. There was no way around it; I had to step up.
Sister Qian looked at me as she was speaking and said, “Come in!”
The three of us quickly took our seats.
“Class has started?” I asked Sun Jing quietly.
Sun Jing looked at Sister Qian and whispered, “Not yet. I heard the school is holding an emergency meeting.”
“Now that everyone is here, I’ll repeat what I said earlier,” Sister Qian seemed to have overheard our conversation and continued, “Due to our principal Chen Guozhong’s misconduct and embezzlement, he has been arrested by the police. For now, Director Wang Tong will temporarily take over the principal’s position. We’re holding a meeting in the auditorium. Everyone, follow me!”
So that’s what happened. Wang Tong was quite capable, getting promoted to principal so quickly. Although it was officially a temporary position, it seemed like he had already solidified his role. The so-called emergency meeting was likely just a formality.
The entire class moved out to the auditorium.
“Damn! This sucks!” Zhang Yu said with a look of frustration.
I was puzzled, “What’s wrong?”
“Damn it! He must remember what happened when we climbed the wall last time. Now that he’s the principal, won’t he try to get us in trouble?” Zhang Yu said helplessly.
Fatty laughed and said, “Good thing it’s not my problem!”
“You’re asking for it!” Zhang Yu said, pretending to kick Fatty, but I stopped him. “Why are you worrying about this? He’s probably thrilled to be the principal and won’t care about us.”
“True!” Zhang Yu nodded and stopped talking.
Since the whole school was having a meeting, it took over twenty minutes for everyone to be seated. When everyone was finally in place, Wang Tong, dressed in a suit, appeared at the podium.
“Hello, students!” Wang Tong greeted us with an air of pretense, holding a speech.
“Hello, Principal!” The students responded in unison. It was quite a spectacle, and it was clear that everyone had already accepted his role as principal.
“Students, because our principal Chen Guozhong has behaved improperly and failed to set a good example, he has been taken away by the police. Now I am acting as the principal!” Wang Tong paused, and the students and teachers immediately understood what he meant. Applause erupted, deafening in its intensity.
“Third High has had a good reputation for decades, being a leading school among nearby institutions…” Wang Tong gave his speech, stirring the audience with periodic applause. When he mentioned plans to revamp the cafeteria, the auditorium almost exploded, with some students even shouting, “Principal, I love you!”
The meeting lasted a full hour. Since the last period of class only had half a lesson left, it was canceled. The scene when Wang Tong announced the end of the meeting and invited everyone to the new cafeteria was absolutely chaotic.
“Xia Tian!” As we were walking, someone suddenly called out to me. I turned around and was surprised to see Sister Qian.
