Chapter 66: Final Exam (part 2)

When the test contents were revealed, the cadets were in shock.

“No, is this real?”

“The demons… we have to catch them?”

“How…?”

Humans naturally fear the unknown. No matter how much one trains, instinct cannot be entirely overcome. Training to prepare for fear wasn’t about erasing it—it was about making the body react automatically when the mind was paralyzed by terror.

While many cadets trembled, there were a few who remained composed. Some had already faced demons in battle and were no longer as easily shaken.

Ian was one of them.

‘Now, Chapter 2 begins.’

The second chapter marked the start of the counterattack. Until now, humanity had been on the defensive, acting passively. But from this point on, they would begin to strike back.

It all started with the performance of the protagonist—the player.

‘At this stage, the protagonist captured a high-ranking demon and secured first place.’

Of course, this was only possible in the game because the protagonist had numerous summons, infinite lives, and the overwhelming power of the system. However, Ian was confident that he now possessed the ability to keep up with the protagonist’s progress.

‘Raw power alone isn’t enough.’

He had two 3-star summons and one 4-star summon—an impressive lineup. Compared to non-paying players, his specifications were far superior. Some free-to-play players wouldn’t even acquire a single 4-star summon until the mid-to-late game.

“Ian.”

Stella appeared before him as he pondered the long-term future.

Seeing her, Ian tilted his head, wondering why she was looking for him again.

“What now?”

“Did you see this?”

“The exam details? Yeah, I saw them.”

“Shall we go together?”

She extended an invitation, suggesting they head south. That was where her home, the Duchy of Eritz, was located.

Of course, the exact locations of the test sites and the groups assigned to each remained confidential until the exam began.

“Is that our decision to make?” Ian asked.

“There’s no reason it can’t be done.”

After all, she was the daughter of one of the four great dukes on the continent—a 4-star Summoner capable of defeating even advanced demons on her own. It wouldn’t be difficult for her to pull a few strings regarding the exam.

“It’s not a bad idea…”

Ian didn’t mind the idea of going to the Duchy of Eritz with her. Life at the Eritz estate was luxurious, and with the Duke’s influence, the cadets would likely be given frontline experience against demons.

‘I need to go with Noah this time.’

The issue was that, for this test, he needed to stay close to the main character. He had to ensure he was assigned to the same location as Noah—the protagonist of this world.

The real question was whether Stella would allow it.

“If you let me go with Noah…”

What would he say if she questioned him?

He couldn’t exactly explain that Noah was the protagonist of this world and that he needed to stay by her side.

Of course, there was a chance Stella wouldn’t question it too much, but Ian wasn’t convinced she would let it slide so easily.

‘Lately… we’ve been getting along too well.’

Ever since he had taken the attack meant for her, his relationship with Stella had advanced significantly.

She still acted like a tsundere, maintaining 70% tsun and 30% dere, but she had started showing her softer side more often—about once every two interactions.

Her behavior also aligned with someone subtly keeping other women in check while displaying affection for Ian.

Although Noah never openly expressed it, she was a woman too. Stella didn’t seem to view Noah as a rival, but… what if Ian continued to show concern for her?

‘She’ll start paying attention to Noah as well.’

And when a woman starts paying attention to another woman, things don’t always go in a positive direction. Would Stella’s interest in Noah turn into something constructive?

On top of that, Noah was a commoner with no title, while Stella was the heir to a ducal house.

If Stella wanted to, she could easily make Noah’s life difficult.

Just because she hadn’t done so yet didn’t mean she wouldn’t in the future.

In the end, Ian didn’t bring up Noah. Time passed, and the day of the exam arrived.

The team assignments were announced.

[East: Noah]

[East: Ian Clark]

[South: Stella Eritz]

“…Are we not going together?”

Stella lowered her head, unable to say anything.

Ian looked at her with an exasperated expression.
