Chapter 67: Rock Paper Scissors (part 1)

“Woh! Ian!”

“Noah.”

As we headed to the classroom to prepare for the final exam, Noah, who had already arrived, raised both hands in greeting.

Aside from her, two other cadets were waiting in the room. Judging by the color of their ties, they were second- and third-year cadets.

‘This is the first time I’ve seen them both…’

With that thought, I naturally sat down next to Noah and waited. After a short while, the teacher entered the room.

“Hmm. Has everyone gathered?”

A childhood friend of the original body, Clara, had pink hair. She glanced at the four of us before jotting something down on her notepad. After finishing her check, she handed out papers and began speaking.

“Do you know what the final exam is?”

“Isn’t it a team match?”

“I never get tired of it…”

The second- and third-year cadets, who had already taken the final exam multiple times, exchanged weary glances. The ever-changing nature of the final exam must have become a source of mild annoyance for them. Still, they didn’t seem to complain much—after all, unexpected challenges only made them stronger.

“Ahaha, it’s the principal’s policy… Anyway, you’ll be heading to the East to fight there. I’ll be selecting the team members now.”

“Here?”

A third-year cadet asked, looking puzzled. There were only four of us in the room—did that mean we were forming the team ourselves?

Unfortunately, his assumption was incorrect.

“You’ll be selecting members from this list to accompany you to the East.”

When we turned our attention to the papers, the names of summoners with 1-star and 2-star summoners were listed. Not a single 3-star summoner was on the roster.

Only then did I understand why we had been gathered.

‘We’re the team leaders.’

Even after graduating from the academy, 3-star summoners were expected to command 1-star and 2-star summoners in real battle. This was likely a preliminary exercise to prepare us for that role. Since we would need to handle this in real combat someday, it made sense to practice now.

This exam wasn’t just about testing individual strength; it was also about evaluating our ability to lead our summoners effectively.

Of course, a 3-star summoner could technically take the battlefield alone and wipe out weaker demons… but exhausting one’s stamina and abilities on low-grade opponents would leave them vulnerable to intermediate and high-level demons.

In the end, war was about strategy. Relying solely on brute force wouldn’t guarantee victory.

“Alright, all that’s left is deciding the selection order… Rock-paper-scissors?”

“Do whatever you want.”

“Alright! Then if you don’t play, you lose!”

The results were as follows: the third-year cadet placed first, Noah second, I was third, and the second-year cadet was last.

Rather than one person selecting all their members at once, we would take turns choosing, ensuring each team ended up with the same number of summoners.

Most likely, we’d each end up with two 2-star summoners and two 1-star summoners. That seemed to be the standard distribution.

The third-year cadet and Noah, who went before me, both chose 2-star summoners first, proving my assumption correct.

“Ian? It’s your turn.”

“Yes.”

I glanced down at the list of names. While others might consider synergy and team balance, I didn’t need to.

“I choose this one.”

“Huh? Ian? That’s a 1-star summoner…”

“Yes. This person is fine.”

I already had three high-ranking summons, so I didn’t need to worry about their consumption.

As long as the summoner followed my commands without question, that was enough.

But Clara frowned, trying to persuade me otherwise.

“Ian, wouldn’t it be better to choose a 2-star summoner first?”

“It’s fine.”

“No, but—”

At that moment, the third-year cadet, who had been watching quietly, spoke up.

“Teacher, isn’t it his choice?”

“Well, yes, but…”

“You told us to do whatever we wanted. Sometimes, people need to experience failure to learn.”

With that, Clara had no choice but to write down the 1-star summoner’s name on my team list.

Meanwhile, the third-year cadet smirked. Because I had chosen a 1-star summoner first, he was now able to add another 2-star summoner to his team.

By optimizing his team composition, he had increased his chances of achieving a high score in the exam.

“Let’s move on quickly.”

“Uh, huh? Oh, right. Who’s your pick…?”

“I choose this one.”

The second-year cadet hurriedly made his selection, clearly frustrated that he had missed the opportunity to benefit from my decision.
