Chapter 68: What We Should Do

“Are you out of your mind? Last time, we messed up Wang Hu so badly, do you really think he’ll help us? Besides, that idiot is still lying in the hospital. How could he possibly help?” Zhang Yu shook his head and cursed.

Fatty seemed confused and didn’t say anything.

Neither Zhang Yu nor I told him the truth about how he got cut; after all, the matter was already resolved, so there was no point in bringing it up again.

I smiled, “He has no choice but to help!”

When Wang Hu was sent to the ambulance, Wang Tong already mentioned the non-existent power behind me and gave Wang Hu a good scolding.

Wang Hu is a smart guy; he knows that I’m on brotherly terms with the Director of the Education Bureau. He even called me to make amends, willing to do as I asked. Since we had already avenged Fatty, there was no need to hold a grudge.

Who knows, Wang Hu might come in handy someday. Like now, we can use him for Zhao Kai.

“I knew you had something up your sleeve!” Zhang Yu patted my shoulder, staring at me intently. It seemed he had noticed something, but since he didn’t mention it, I pretended not to know.

“What are you guys talking about? I don’t understand a thing,” Fatty scratched his head, looking puzzled. But Zhang Yu and I both ignored him.

I dialed Wang Hu’s number, and he answered quickly, “Brother Tian, what do you need?”

“How’s your stay in the hospital?” I didn’t get straight to the point.

Wang Hu chuckled on the other end, “Very comfortable, considering who put me here.”

“You looking for a beating? Want to go another round?” Hearing this, Wang Hu got nervous and quickly changed the subject, “Brother Tian, you didn’t call just to mock me, right?”

I didn’t beat around the bush; delaying too long might let Zhao Kai slip away. “I need you to rough someone up!”

After explaining the situation, Wang Hu immediately went to find Zhao Kai. I didn’t expect Zhao Kai to be quite well-known at school, so no description was needed.

Although Wang Hu and most of his lackeys were sent to the hospital by Zhang Yu and me, a few remained at school. Beating up Zhao Kai wouldn’t take many people.

“Is it done?” Zhang Yu looked at me, puzzled.

I smiled, “Of course, let’s go enjoy the show.”

Zhang Yu knew my character well; I wouldn’t say anything unless I was confident, so he let out a few excited yells and followed me.

“Wait for me!” Fatty shouted and followed as well.

For someone like Zhao Kai, I felt a simple beating wouldn’t be enough. I still hadn’t settled the score with him for stepping on the stool last time.

As we approached the school gate, we saw a group of six or seven people surrounding someone, who turned out to be Zhao Kai.

Wang Hu sure works efficiently.

“Hey kid, got any money?” The leader, a thug, sneered. I glanced at him and recognized him as Hedgehog.

Zhao Kai, usually focused on studying, had a sharp tongue and offended quite a few people. However, no one really troubled him since they were all classmates. But this sudden group ambush must have scared him to death.

“I’ve spent all my money!” Zhao Kai said, but quickly reached into his pocket with one hand while protecting himself with the other—talk about giving yourself away.

Hedgehog, with one hand wrapped in a bandage, grabbed Zhao Kai’s collar with the other and said, “Do you have a death wish? Hurry up and hand over the money so we can go enjoy ourselves at the internet cafe!”

“I really don’t have any…” Zhao Kai tried to argue, but Hedgehog released him and slapped him across the face, cursing, “You dare to argue with me, you little brat!”

After getting slapped, Zhao Kai was stunned. He quickly pulled out some tens from his pocket and handed them to Hedgehog, pleading, “Brother, this is all I have, please let me go!”

Zhao Kai is really one to submit to force; one slap, and he handed over all his money.

Hedgehog counted the money, frowned, and then threw it back in Zhao Kai’s face, “You think this little bit is going to satisfy me?”

Tears started streaming down Zhao Kai’s face, and he sobbed, “Brother, that’s really all I have!”

“You brat, wasting my time with this little bit of money! Beat him up!” With that, he kicked Zhao Kai to the ground, and the group began punching and kicking him. Zhao Kai covered his head, screaming in pain.

I patted Zhang Yu on the shoulder and smiled, “It’s our turn now.” Zhang Yu was taken aback and asked, “Weren’t we supposed to stay out of this?” Although confused, Zhang Yu still followed me.

As we walked, I said to Zhang Yu, “I just thought of a better idea. Here’s the plan…”

“Man, you’re ruthless!” Zhang Yu stared at me in disbelief, then grinned, “But I like it!”

“Zhang Yu, look, isn’t that our class monitor getting beaten up?” I called out Zhang Yu’s name while looking at Zhao Kai, who was being beaten.

Zhang Yu pretended to be surprised and said, “Yeah, what’s going on here?”

“Should we help out?” I shouted loudly.

Zhang Yu shook his head and shouted back, “He reported me today, made me suffer a lot. I’m not helping!”

“We’re all classmates; we can’t just stand by and watch him get bullied, right?” Damn, my throat was getting dry from all this shouting.

“Fine! Let’s go!” Zhang Yu shouted again, and we both rushed forward, with Fatty tailing us, realizing that we were acting.

Seeing us rush over, Hedgehog seemed confused. I gave him a look, and he quickly caught on.

“Mind your own business, or I’ll beat you too!” Hedgehog glared at us fiercely. I have to admit, this guy’s got some acting talent.

“Brother, the guy you’re stepping on is our class monitor. Could you give us a break and stop hitting him?” I frowned at Hedgehog, making sure my acting was on point.

Hedgehog sneered, “You think I care about your monitor?” With a wave of his hand, he ordered, “Guys, beat them too!”

Zhang Yu and I quickly ran to Zhao Kai and helped him up. With snot and tears all over his face, Zhao Kai looked at us and said, “Thank you!”

Thank you? You might want to save that for later!

At that moment, Hedgehog’s men came over and started attacking Zhang Yu and me.

We exchanged glances and used Zhao Kai as a shield in front of us.

It was brutal. Hedgehog’s men weren’t exactly careful—who kicks someone in that spot!

As Zhao Kai endured the relentless assault, crying out in pain, a line from a poem suddenly came to mind:

“The Wu Gorge of the Three Gorges of Badong is long,

The cries of the monkeys soaks my clothes with tears.”

I wondered if Li Daoyuan felt the same way when he wrote that.

Seeing it was enough, I signaled Hedgehog with a look. Hedgehog nodded and said fiercely, “You’re lucky this time. Let’s go, guys!”

When we looked at Zhao Kai again, his face was red and swollen.

“Thank you, thank you so much!” Zhao Kai wiped his tears while thanking Zhang Yu and me.

Zhang Yu and I exchanged smiles, “This is what we should do!”
