Chapter 72: Fool (part 1)

After cleaning the room with the help of her summon, Aire looked at Ian with a proud expression, her chest puffed out.

“What do you think? I’m someone who can get things done!”

“Yeah, well done.”

Clap, clap, clap.

As she climbed up and down excitedly, Ian quickly brushed her off, wondering if she might throw her head back and burst into laughter next.

“So, why did you come?”

“Oh, right! Ian Clark, come under me!”

“Come under…?”

“Of course, I mean come to the North!”

She struck a dramatic pose and pointed a finger at Ian. However, he ignored her nonsense and walked straight to the kitchen.

After turning on the tea pot, Ian made himself a cup of tea, letting the boiling water steep before taking a sip. The hot liquid warmed his stomach.

“Whew… Do you want some too?”

“Ah, yes. Thank you.”

Aire accepted the cup but immediately placed it on the table, clearly unprepared for how hot it was. She then gave Ian a bewildered look, as if he were some kind of monster.

“… How did you swallow that all at once?”

“Just a habit, I guess.”

There had been times when work demanded it—when he had no choice but to gulp down scalding hot coffee before rushing back to his duties. He had simply mastered the skill of drinking it, whether his cup was full or empty.

“More importantly,” Ian said, frowning as he watched Aire cautiously blow on her tea, “why should I go to the North? What’s in it for me?”

“Hehe, are you actually considering it?” she asked with a smirk.

“I’m just listening to the conditions.”

“Alright! Then let me introduce you to the ‘tremendous’ benefits of coming to the North!”

She crossed her arms and snorted proudly before revealing a supposed “tremendous” benefit, her expression radiating excitement.

“If you come north, I’ll give you the privilege of stroking my hair every day!”

Ian blinked.

“… I beg your pardon?”

“What? Are you so shocked that you think you misheard? Fine, I’ll say it again— you can stroke my hair every day!”

“No, who in their right mind would agree to such terms!?”

Ian raised his voice slightly, causing Aire to flinch in surprise. Her eyes widened like a startled rabbit.

“H-Hic!”

She began hiccuping uncontrollably. Tears welled up in her eyes, and she soon looked on the verge of crying.

“B-But my subordinates… hic… said they liked it…!”

“Who exactly told you that?”

“M-My… my subordinates…!”

“… Do you seriously believe everything they say?”

“D-Don’t insult my subordinates… hic…!”

Ian sighed. No wonder Aire was this foolish—her vassals were clearly enablers. Then again, she was rather attractive. In the harsh Northern lands, someone like her was probably treated like a princess.

“Ugh… Oof…! Hic! W-Why won’t it stop…? Hic!”

Ian let out another sigh before walking over with a glass of water.

“Here. Drink this in one go—don’t stop until it’s finished.”

“O-Okay…”

Aire hesitated for a second, but then obediently drank the water in long gulps. After about a minute, she finally realized the hiccups had stopped. She wiped the corners of her mouth.

“… Oh, thank you.”

“It was nothing.”

Aire let out a small sigh and crossed her arms.

“Anyway, if you don’t like that offer, there’s nothing I can do about it… At best, I could offer you half the territory, as many heirlooms and crafts from the North as you’d like, or something like that….”

Ian stared at her, dumbfounded.

“You should have led with that.”

Who in their right mind had sent this girl to negotiate? Ian wanted to take a good look inside that person’s head.

A complete novice who didn’t even know how to negotiate properly… That alone was bad enough. But sending someone as sheltered as her—like a frog in a well or a caged bird—was beyond ridiculous.

Did they really think Ian would be swayed by her cuteness and naïve behavior? If so, whoever came up with this idea needed to be locked up for the sake of humanity’s future.

Aire, however, seemed thrilled that heirlooms and territories alone might be enough to convince him.

“That’s all it takes?!”

“… Normal people would move for that, yes.”

“Alright! Perfect! Yes!”

Excited, Aire grabbed Ian’s hands and shook them up and down.

Ian, still blankly staring at her, barely registered what was happening before she let go and made her way to the door.

“Then, I’ll be counting on you! Oh, right—you can call me Aire!”

“No, wait—what does that even—”

“See you tomorrow!”

And just like that, she disappeared.

Ian exhaled and sat down on his bed.

Perhaps because the water elemental king had personally removed the moisture, the bedding felt surprisingly fresh.

Thanks to that, he didn’t have to deal with the hassle of fixing anything. At this point, running away wouldn’t change anything.

So, he simply surrendered to exhaustion and fell asleep.
