Chapter 78: Earthworm (part 1)

Koo-! Koo!

Jaejae-Jack!

“Uh…?”

Early in the morning, Baron Clark woke up to the sound of an unfamiliar noise echoing through the mansion.

Slowly, he sat up.

A damp towel slipped from his forehead, landing on the blanket and soaking it. The baron picked up the towel and placed it on the table beside him. That was when he remembered—he had lost consciousness the previous night.

“I fainted… but why?”

Unfortunately, no matter how hard he tried to recall, the memory eluded him. It was as if his own mind instinctively blocked him from remembering.

Frowning, he grabbed the glass of water beside him, took a sip, and stood up.

Woohoo!

“What on earth happened? And what is this unbearable noise?!”

Someone was making a ruckus in his mansion—on his own estate, no less! Such commotion wouldn’t occur unless trees were being cut down. Irritated, the baron threw open the window to see what was going on.

And there, outside the window, he locked eyes with a giant—one so massive that it loomed taller than his entire mansion.

“Ah! Baron! Good morning!”

Sitting on the giant’s shoulder, Noah waved enthusiastically, her voice cheerful.

Of course, the baron couldn’t hear her from inside the mansion. But the mere sight of Noah’s summon was enough to jolt his memory back in full force.

“M-my son… a 4-star Summoner…?”

Reeling from shock, the baron collapsed once again—this time, not waking up until well past noon.

Baron Clark had many problems. For starters, the wildlife population on his land was excessive—to the point where he, a nobleman, had to go hunting himself.

Fortunately, that problem had an easy solution.

“Should I just get rid of them all?”

“Master, we’re not hunters…”

“Does it matter? Oh, why don’t we make it a little more interesting? How about a bet? Whoever takes out the least has to serve the others a bath!”

“Sounds good.”

“Why am I the one who always loses in these things?!”

“Start!”

The three summons Cadet Ian called forth shot off into the sky, crossing the mountains in an instant. Within moments, they had wiped out the beasts infesting the land.

Normally, tampering with an ecosystem like this would lead to disastrous consequences. However, Ian wasn’t too concerned.

“As long as the animals here aren’t wiped out, it won’t cause any major issues.”

In nature, it wasn’t uncommon for certain species to be culled to near extinction. Ecosystems didn’t collapse overnight.

With that problem out of the way, Ian turned his attention to the next issue—the unbearable stench lingering in the air.

Had they been at the Academy, he could have easily purchased magic tools to deal with the odor. But out here in this remote territory, such luxuries were unavailable.

Still, after a moment of thought, Ian realized he didn’t need magic tools.

“Tada! The stench of manure… gone!”

He had the Witch Empress—a 4-star summon powerful enough to be revered.

Witches wielded magic, making them predecessors of mages. In the game, the Empress Witch was capable of summoning meteor showers and triggering an ice age. But here, in reality, she was more like an all-purpose magical Swiss Army knife.

“There’s nothing she can’t do.”

“This is it,” Ian said, satisfied.

“Yeah! It finally looks decent now!” Noah grinned.

With the beast threat eliminated, the fields plowed in a single day, and the overwhelming stench gone, the people of the territory finally had smiles on their faces.

But for Ian and Noah, it still wasn’t enough.

They wanted to do more.

Sitting together, they began brainstorming ways to further improve life in the territory.

“Should we develop a gold mine?”

“Hmm… do you really think lifelong farmers would know how to mine gold?”

“We could just levitate the gold and hand it to them…”

“No. There’s a saying—Teach a man to fish, don’t just give him the fish.”

Their opinions clashed. But since Noah’s argument was reasonable, Ian decided to go with it. Instead of providing direct solutions, they searched for ways to support the people without making them overly dependent.

Surprisingly, there were plenty of options.

“The road between villages is blocked by fallen rocks, but we’ve never had the manpower to clear them…”

They removed the boulders obstructing the path.

“My body isn’t what it used to be. I’ve grown so weak with age…”

“May the gods bless you—”

“I-I feel younger!”

They healed the injured and cured the sick among the people.

“There’s a giant snake in the mountain behind us! But my parents don’t believe me!”

After hearing a child’s plea, they set off to investigate—only to make an alarming discovery.

“Noah,” Ian called.

“Yeah, Ian?”

They had reached the mountain’s rear when they found an enormous hole—no, a tunnel.

It was far too large for human use.

Ian knew exactly what such a tunnel was meant for.

“…Demons.”

Noah’s expression tensed. “This is bad, isn’t it?”

“Probably.”

It was the same type of tunnel demons had used to infiltrate the Academy.
