Chapter 77: Hometown (part 2)

“…Ah.”

The filthy smell of the countryside hit Ian, making him realize once again that this was a completely different world.

Only in the academy near the capital, where magic and summons were prevalent, could cleanliness and sanitation comparable to modern times be maintained. But was it truly impossible to achieve in the countryside?

Frowning, Ian stepped out of the carriage. The coachman parked the wagon in a suitable spot, took the horse, and disappeared.

“Hmm~ Ah, this smell. It’s been a long time.”

“Is that so?”

“Yes? What’s that supposed to mean? Ian, haven’t you been here plenty of times before?”

“I never have.”

If he had to choose, he would rather smell burning smoke than this stench that instinctively made him frown.

Meanwhile, Noah ran ahead with an innocent expression, like a typical country girl. As she ran, she eagerly called out to someone.

“Grandfather!”

“Huh? Who is this!”

The elderly men who were plowing the fields turned their heads, their faces lighting up as they warmly greeted Noah. She embraced each of them one by one, greeting them with enthusiasm.

“Noah.”

“Yes? What is it?”

“I’m going home first. You can come by later.”

“Alright!”

With that, Ian made his way toward his mansion. Though he had no memories of his hometown, the farmland had no signposts, and yet he instinctively knew where his house was.

Among the rows of shabby houses, a well-built mansion stood atop a small ridge—a structure befitting a nobleman.

“…Ugh.”

Ian let out a deep sigh and summoned Anna. With a sudden burst of light, a woman in armor appeared. The townspeople nearby gasped in surprise, but Ian paid them no mind as he climbed onto Anna’s back.

“Master?”

“Take me over there.”

“…I am not a means of transportation.”

Despite her words, Anna carried Ian without complaint and sprinted toward the mansion. The moment they arrived, she vanished.

Ian crossed the unguarded front entrance and stepped inside.

‘So this is it.’

This was the mansion where the baron resided, yet its condition left much to be desired. Ian frowned as he entered and soon spotted a maid cleaning.

“Young Master…?”

It seemed he had arrived at just the right time. As Ian calmly looked at her, the maid abruptly dropped her broom and shouted at the top of her lungs.

“The master has returned!”

“He’s back…”

“He has returned…”

Her voice echoed throughout the mansion. Moments later, two more maids rushed forward to greet him.

“Young Master, welcome back.”

“Allow us to escort you to your room.”

Ian found it surprising that this cramped mansion still had three maids. He was now even more curious to meet the owner of this house.

“…Where is my father?”

“The baron went hunting,” one of the maids replied.

“He should return in the afternoon,” the other added.

“Oh, is that so?”

Realizing he wouldn’t be able to see his father immediately, Ian followed the maids to his room. To be honest, he had no recollection of it, so there was little emotional attachment.

However, one thing was clear.

“…Is this really my room?”

“That’s correct. If you’re unsatisfied with the cleaning—”

“No, it’s fine.”

Waving his hand lightly, Ian dismissed the maids and looked around.

Narrow and old.

The desire to leave was already burning like a fire in his chest.

That evening, the baron returned.

“Oh, Ian! My son!”

The moment he stepped into the mansion, he pulled Ian into a strong embrace, overflowing with joy. His body reeked of sweat and dust from his hunt. Noticing Ian’s reluctance, the baron realized his condition, took a step back, and laughed heartily.

“Heh, this isn’t the time for this. We must prepare a feast today!”

Without hesitation, he ordered the maids to cook the wild boar he had caught before heading off to bathe.

Ian recalled the so-called “bathroom” here—if it could even be called that. It was nothing more than a drum filled with boiling water.

When the baron returned, refreshed from his bath, he eagerly joined Ian at the dinner table. It was clear he wanted to hear about his son’s accomplishments firsthand.

“I was so surprised when you suddenly requested a Soul Stone… Why did you need it?”

“Just because.”

“Is that so? Come to think of it, I never even asked how many summons you contracted. Can you show me?”

“Well, don’t be too shocked.”

“Heh, heh. What, do you have a 2-star summon or something…?”

In response to the baron’s words, Ian summoned his creatures. Three women appeared at his side.

Seeing them, the baron stiffened slightly before slowly opening his mouth.

“…Hahaha. So, triplet summons? That’s quite unusual…”

“There are three of them, Father.”

“…Three?”

“Yes. Three.”

A situation unheard of since the time of the first emperor.

The baron’s mouth hung open, his entire body trembling.

“…What are their ranks?” he finally managed to ask.

“3-star, 3-star, 4-star.”

“Ugh—!”

The baron swayed as if the world had just collapsed around him. The escort knight swiftly grabbed him before he could fall, supporting him as he was carried to his room.

Ian silently watched the scene unfold before standing up and cautiously leaving the mansion.

In the distance, Noah was riding on her summon, making her way toward him.

“Ian.”

“Yes?”

“…I never thought my hometown would be like this.”

“Me neither.”

Noah lowered her head, her expression clouded.

Returning home after so long, she could clearly see just how poor her homeland was.

And just how extravagant the life she had been living truly was.

“…I want to change it.”

“That’s a good idea.”

“Huh…?”

“Well, I was thinking the same thing.”

They both shared the same thought.

During the vacation, they would change this land completely.
