After confirming that Niu Shisan’s voice wouldn’t reappear, I turned my attention to the cultivation technique, Nine Revolutions of Heaven and Earth.
Nine is the ultimate number, and “heaven and earth” represents the world. The name of this technique, at its core, implies flipping the heavens and earth nine times. The name is pretty grand, but I wonder how effective it really is.
Since Niu Shisan has already ascended to the immortal realm, the technique should be decent, right?
“Heaven as Yang, Earth as Yin, the cosmos revolves nine times, inverting Mount Sumeru! Shaking the nine heavens, startling the nine hells, the cosmos revolves nine times, man and heaven become one!!”
The opening of Nine Revolutions of Heaven and Earth was filled with lofty phrases. I couldn’t originally understand the ancient text, but unlike martial arts manuals, cultivation techniques forcibly made me recognize the characters.
The technique is divided into nine levels. According to it, the True Qi in my body can already be cultivated to the second level. However, everything requires a solid foundation, so it’s better to practice the first level first.
The first level’s cultivation method is somewhat similar to the breathing techniques Mei’er taught me—both require fully opening the mouth and nose. But the tricky part is, after refining spiritual energy into True Qi, the True Qi must be refined nine more times for purification.
Since my body is already filled with True Qi, I can skip the first step and sit cross-legged to begin refining the True Qi within me.
Following the refining method of Nine Revolutions of Heaven and Earth diligently, I purified my True Qi over and over. After the ninth cycle, half of the True Qi in my dantian had diminished compared to before.
However, the remaining True Qi was far more refined and stronger than before the refinement.
Once the True Qi is purified, I can move on to the second level.
The second level of Nine Revolutions of Heaven and Earth mainly involves the energy circulation paths, opening certain vital meridians for True Qi to flow.
Carefully guiding the True Qi within my dantian, I followed the energy circulation paths outlined in Nine Revolutions of Heaven and Earth. Thanks to my accidental opening of many meridians last time, circulating the True Qi wasn’t too difficult.
What excited me was learning from Nine Revolutions of Heaven and Earth that the meridians I had unintentionally opened last time were the twelve main meridians of the human body!
The twelve meridians, also known as the Twelve Primary Channels, are the main channels of all meridians. Named after their Yin and Yang attributes and corresponding organs, they are: Lung meridian of the hand-Taiyin, Pericardium meridian of the hand-jueyin, Heart meridian of the hand-shaoyin, Large Intestine meridian of the hand-yangming, Triple Burner meridian of the hand-shaoyang, Small Intestine meridian of the hand-taoyang, Spleen meridian of the foot-tayin, Liver meridian of the foot-jueyin, Kidney meridian of the foot-shaoyin, Stomach meridian of the foot-yangming, Gallbladder meridian of the foot-shaoyang, and Bladder meridian of the foot-taoyang.
These twelve primary channels connect at both ends and cycle continuously, and a cultivator must open them to allow True Qi to circulate freely. The so-called small and large cycles of True Qi will have to wait until I can open the Ren and Du meridians, which link to the twelve primary channels.
Speaking of which, in Master Jin’s books, anyone who opens the Ren and Du meridians becomes a peerless master. I wonder what will happen in real life.
For now, my True Qi is far from sufficient to open the Ren and Du meridians, so I have to continue diligently cultivating Nine Revolutions of Heaven and Earth.
After circulating True Qi through the twelve primary channels nine times, the second level was complete. To reach the third level, I only need to wait until I have enough True Qi.
Although I could directly consume the Millennium Blood Ginseng King to absorb spiritual energy, it feels like a waste. After all, there are only two of those left.
Since I can’t eat the Blood Ginseng King, I’ll just consume something else. There are plenty of heavenly treasures in the Storage Ring, including many energy-gathering elixirs, and quite a few spirit stones. Right, I didn’t use that spirit stone from last time. Let’s absorb its spiritual energy now!
Without hesitation, I took out the spirit stone, held it in my hand, and activated Nine Revolutions of Heaven and Earth, absorbing the spiritual energy within.
This spirit stone, whose rank I don’t know, had far more True Qi than the pseudo-spirit stone I used last time, and it was much purer. Thanks to the cultivation technique, I didn’t have to fully deplete the spirit stone’s energy to stop this time.
Using the first level of Nine Revolutions of Heaven and Earth, I refined the True Qi repeatedly. Before long, the spiritual energy within the stone was fully absorbed.
Nine Revolutions of Heaven and Earth doesn’t just purify True Qi—it also expands the dantian, albeit not by much. Still, it was indeed larger than before, which naturally increased the storage of True Qi as well.
When I opened my eyes, it was already the afternoon of the next day. Time had passed so quickly. If I didn’t know that Qi cultivation extended my lifespan, I wouldn’t want to waste all this time.
I walked into the bedroom and saw that Mei’er had fallen asleep at some point. To my surprise, even while she slept, spiritual energy in the air was slowly flowing into her body.
I couldn’t help but marvel at her strength. But then again, Mei’er is a Nine-tailed Fox. Though her powers were sealed, the things she had already cultivated could never be erased.
I always found it strange—no matter how fast Mei’er cultivated, it should take a thousand years to reach the strength of a Nine-tail. Yet she knows nothing about it. Sometimes, I really feel like everything happening now is just my imagination.
Mei’er currently has three ways to increase her power. The first is by diligently cultivating and absorbing the already scarce spiritual energy in the air to unlock her sealed tails.
The second is by consuming heavenly treasures. Although there are many in the Storage Ring, the only thing that could significantly boost Mei’er’s strength would be the Millennium Blood Ginseng King.
The third method is to devour the demon cores of other demon clans. However, in today’s society, unlike in ancient times when demons, gods, and Buddhas roamed the skies, cultivation has become hidden from the world.
I haven’t even seen a demon, let alone hunted one to obtain a demon core for Mei’er.
I tucked Mei’er in and opened my computer. The internet is full of strange and mysterious things. Although their authenticity is questionable, I thought I’d take my chances.
I visited the local forum to see if there were any leads. Although demons are rare, someone must have seen one. After all, they haven’t completely disappeared from this world.
If I find even the slightest clue, I’ll give it a try and see if I can kill a few demons to help Mei’er recover.
As soon as I entered the forum, a highlighted post in red caught my eye.
“Ghost spotted in the South Cemetery, with pictures! Come see for yourself!” was the title of the post, with over five thousand replies. In a city forum, getting that many replies was impressive.
I clicked on the post to check it out. The general content was like this:
The poster and his friends had been drinking heavily and boasted about how brave he was. Naturally, someone doubted him, so they bet on whether he would dare to spend a night at the South Cemetery. Having drunk too much, the poster agreed. The first half of the night was uneventful, but around 3 a.m., he suddenly heard blood-curdling screams. Terrified but afraid of losing face, he forced himself to stay, only to see something he shouldn’t have seen.
There was an attached picture. The cemetery was pitch black, but the poster’s phone had a flash, capturing a blurry white shadow.
The replies were a mix of reactions:
“Snatching 2nd floor, shooting 3rd floor in the face…”
“No sign of Photoshop.”
“Classic stuff!”
“Rich guy teasing again…”
The first few replies were just people competing for spots. It wasn’t until a page later that I saw some serious comments.
“My grandma always said the South Cemetery was unclean. I can’t believe the OP really dared to stay there overnight. Respect!”
“This is obviously fake. If there really was a ghost, would the poster still have dared to take pictures?”
“My friend passed through there on his way home last time and had a similar experience. I thought he was joking, but now I’m not so sure.”
“I live near there and have never seen anything.”
Some believed it; others doubted it. If this were before I met Mei’er, I would have laughed and called it nonsense. But now, I couldn’t be so sure.
Should I go check it out tonight? I wondered. But this was a ghost story, not a demon one, and I wouldn’t be able to get any demon cores. There didn’t seem to be much point in going.
After thinking it over, I dismissed the idea with a smile, closed the webpage, and started playing a game instead.
