Chapter 204: Soul Reaper

These two letters may seem ordinary, but those who know their true meaning would shudder in fear.

The letters “SR” had only appeared once in China, decades ago. Yet this time, they sent shockwaves through the highest echelons of power.

Originally, the capital wasn’t ruled by just four great families—there were five: the Xia, Zhao, Qin, Tang, and Li families.

Though the Li family had ranked last among the five, they were still a force to be reckoned with. However, they offended someone they shouldn’t have, and in a single night, they were wiped out.

No one knew exactly who they had angered, but one thing was certain—before their extermination, the Li family received a card.

The card was pure white, bearing only two letters: “SR”.

The Li family publicly claimed indifference, but secretly, they fortified their defenses, summoned numerous experts, and armed every guard with firearms. Yet, in the end, they vanished into the smoke of history.

Of all the corpses, only the family head, Li Xiongfei, remained relatively intact. The rest died gruesomely.

But Li Xiongfei’s death was the most bizarre.

Embedded in his forehead was that same “SR” card—except now, it was no longer white. It had turned crimson, soaked in blood.

What made his death so eerie was that the card’s penetration depth wasn’t fatal. No lethal wounds were found on his body—only an unnaturally pale complexion, as if his soul had been ripped out.

His expression was one of sheer terror, as though he had seen a ghost.

The other families knew the Li family’s strength well. Yet, despite their heavy defenses, they were annihilated overnight.

The old man told me this story. I remember how his usually calm face twisted with unease when he spoke of it.

Back then, I was too young to grasp the gravity of the situation and asked him what “SR” meant.

He took a deep breath, closed his eyes, and said, “Some say it stands for ‘Soul Reaper’… but later generations simply called him the Grim Reaper.”

Unconsciously, a cold sweat broke out on my forehead. My throat went dry, and I swallowed hard.

If the “SR” on the sniper rifle and combat knife carried the same meaning as the one that exterminated the Li family… then I truly had no idea what kind of monster the Qin family had provoked!

Right now, I’m at the Half-Step Lunar Reflection realm—I can fly, turn invisible—but I know for a fact that even I couldn’t wipe out an entire family under heavy gunfire.

And I certainly couldn’t kill someone without leaving a single wound!

According to the old man, “SR” originally referred to a single person. But now, it seemed more like an organization—an assassin guild.

“Don’t panic. Don’t panic,” I muttered to myself, forcing my nerves to steady.

If this really was the same SR from back then, Qin Mengdie would’ve been dead long ago—hell, the entire Qin family might’ve already disappeared from the capital.

But she’s still alive, living safely under my protection.

This suggested that SR was now an assassin organization founded by the same person who annihilated the Li family. The killers targeting Qin Mengdie were likely its members.

Even without the old man’s story, I’d have recognized SR as a terrifying force. The assassin’s methods alone proved they were ruthlessly trained, treating life and death as trivial.

I didn’t know whether to consider myself lucky or doomed.

Doomed, because I was up against SR.

Lucky, because it was no longer just one man, but an organization—meaning I wouldn’t have to face that Grim Reaper directly.

Before, I hadn’t taken protecting Qin Mengdie too seriously. I figured, “How bad could it be, guarding someone from the Qin family?”

But now I realized how wrong I was. This wasn’t just dangerous—it was lethal.

The assassination attempt failed, so SR would definitely send someone stronger next time.

The more I thought about it, the more my stomach twisted into knots.

“Screw SR! If they send one, I’ll kill one. If they send two, I’ll kill a pair! No way some assassins are tougher than a cultivator like me!” I cursed under my breath.

Just then, my door swung open. I looked up—it was Mei’er.

Noticing my expression, she frowned. “Xia Tian, are you okay?”

“I’m fine,” I forced a smile and shook my head. Then I asked, “Mei’er, do you know of anyone who can kill without leaving a wound?”

She blinked, thinking for a moment. “If all my tails were restored… I could probably do it.”

My eyes lit up. “How?”

“Just pull their soul out of their body,” she said cheerfully, as if discussing the weather. “No soul means no life!”

Her words hit me like a thunderbolt.

If what she said was true, wouldn’t that require at least Solar Crown Peak strength to extract a soul?

I stared at her in disbelief. “So… only a Nine-Tailed demon can do that?”

“Not necessarily,” she explained, shaking her head. “I don’t know the exact level needed. I could do it when I had nine tails, but I’m not sure about now. Definitely not with my current power!” She stuck out her tongue playfully.

I let out a sigh of relief. Good.

But this also confirmed that SR’s strength surpassed mine—likely Lunar Reflection Mid-Stage or higher. After all, Mei’er had already unlocked four tails, equivalent to a Lunar Reflection Mid-Stage cultivator.

How did the Li family provoke a cultivator? And how did the Qin family get tangled with this organization now? The more I thought, the worse my headache grew.

Still, the current situation suggested SR himself wouldn’t intervene. He likely had no direct grudge against the Qin family—someone probably hired his assassins. If so, things were slightly more manageable.

“Xia Tian, did something strange happen?” Mei’er asked, studying my face.

“No, just thinking,” I replied with a smile.

She eyed me skeptically. “Really?”

“Oh? You dare doubt me?!” I grinned, standing up suddenly. “You’re getting punished for this!”

Mei’er yelped and bolted, laughing. “Stupid Xia Tian, you can’t catch me!”

“Still talking back? I’m definitely taking a few extra bites today!” I chased her around the room, our laughter filling the air.
