Chapter 48: Imported Medicine

The three of us arrived at the newly opened KFD.

As we approached the counter to order, the server teased me, “What kind of ‘Kaifeng cuisine’ would you like today?”

It seemed that my joke about “Kaifeng cuisine” last time had left a lasting impression on him.

I laughed awkwardly, “Come on, don’t tease me!” Then I continued, “This time there are three of us. Can you recommend something good for us to eat?”

“You could get a family bucket, or if you prefer, three meals with a sundae each,” the server suggested seriously, dropping the playful tone.

Personally, I didn’t think there was anything particularly tasty at KFD, though I rarely ate there.

“Alright, let’s get three meals and a family bucket!” Since it was Zhang Yu’s money, I didn’t mind spending it.

“Beauty Xu, you really like this KFD, huh? You came here last time too,” I asked while sipping my cola.

Xu Xin took small bites of her burger and replied after swallowing, “It’s just convenient, not that I love it. Besides, if someone treats, why not?”

I continued drinking my cola, answering Xu Xin’s questions whenever she talked to me, but mostly stayed silent to give Zhang Yu a chance.

However, Zhang Yu stammered whenever he spoke to Xu Xin, not knowing what to say. He really didn’t know how to make the most of an opportunity.

After finishing our meal, I checked my phone and saw that it was getting late. We had about ten minutes before class started.

We decided to jump the wall to get back in time. The three of us reached the wall, but Xu Xin walked slowly, which delayed us a bit.

“Hurry up, we’re almost out of time!” I sat on the wall and reached out to pull Xu Xin up.

I jumped down and looked around. Luckily, no teachers were around. If it had been like last time, even Wang Tong would have had trouble defending me, since I had already been caught once.

“Come on, I’ll catch you,” I said to Xu Xin. But this time, she didn’t agree like last time, “I can get down by myself. I’m not scared anymore.”

“Are you sure?” I asked, worried. But Xu Xin insisted on coming down by herself, so I let her.

Xu Xin excitedly climbed down the wall but let out a scream when she landed.

I rushed over, “What happened?”

“Nothing…” Xu Xin bit her lip, trying to act tough, but the tears in her eyes betrayed her.

Zhang Yu jumped over and saw Xu Xin with tears in her eyes. “What’s wrong?” he asked.

“She probably twisted her ankle,” I sighed, not expecting a simple meal to lead to this.

“Is it serious?” Zhang Yu asked urgently, concerned for Xu Xin.

“It looks bad,” I said, looking at Zhang Yu. “Maybe you should carry her to the infirmary?” As a brother, this was all I could do. It was up to Zhang Yu to seize the opportunity.

“But the first class is taught by the tiger lady…” Zhang Yu gave me a grateful look, clearly wanting to take the chance but daunted by our teacher’s intimidation.

Xu Xin wiped her tears and looked at me, “Let Xia Tian take me.” As she spoke, the bell rang.

Zhang Yu hesitated but ultimately couldn’t overcome his fear of our teacher. He said a few words and hurried to class.

“I’ll carry you,” I said. Zhang Yu had the chance, but he gave it up himself.

Xu Xin blushed but let me carry her.

We walked in silence for a while. Despite Zhang Yu’s possible infatuation, I felt guilty being so close to Xu Xin.

“Does your friend like me?” Xu Xin whispered in my ear.

I was stunned and forced a smile, “You noticed?”

“You’re different today. I could tell during the meal…” Xu Xin’s tone was calm. I couldn’t see her expression because she was behind me, making it hard to guess her thoughts.

I took a deep breath, “Could you give him a chance?”

“We’re not suited for each other…” Xu Xin said softly.

That was the line I’d heard countless times. It was always, “We’re not suited,” or “You’re a nice person.” They were all excuses. A straightforward “I don’t like you” would be better, making it easier to move on.

“Why not? Zhang Yu is somewhat handsome,” I tried to get her to reconsider.

“I don’t like guys who sm0ke…”

Damn! Zhang Yu just had to pick up smoking. I said, “Maybe he’d quit for you.”

“If someone changes for another person, losing their own traits, I don’t think they have a reason to exist in this world,” Xu Xin’s calm tone left me speechless.

I fell silent, unsure what to say. Xu Xin’s firm tone made it clear Zhang Yu had no chance.

“Am I very annoying?” After a long silence, Xu Xin spoke again.

I smiled, “Of course not. You’re so pretty, anyone would like you.” Though I didn’t know why she asked, it made me feel uncomfortable.

“Do you like me?”

What? Was she flirting?

I laughed awkwardly, “Of course. Who wouldn’t like a beauty?” I wasn’t lying; everyone likes beautiful people. But my feelings for Xu Xin were more of admiration.

“Then why are you trying to set me up with someone else?” Xu Xin pressed on.

Did saving her once really make her like me? I didn’t believe in such clichéd hero-saves-beauty stories in real life.

“Are you feverish?” I diverted the topic, trying to act nonchalant.

Xu Xin took a deep breath and said seriously, “I’m serious.”

“We’re at the infirmary. Let’s deal with this first,” I never thought the distance from the field to the infirmary could feel so long.

I knocked on the door, and the school nurse came out, adjusting her glasses. “What happened?”

“She twisted her ankle,” I said, carefully placing Xu Xin on the bed.

I was sweating, not from fatigue, but from the pressure of Xu Xin’s words.

“Young man, you’re not in good shape. You’re tall, but carrying a girl makes you sweat like this!” The nurse teased me, then handed me a Yunnan Ba!yao spray. “You do it. This girl is so pretty, I’d be jealous if I did it.” (G: Yunnan Ba!yao  is a proprietary traditional Ch!nese medicine marketed and used as a hemostatic product in both human and veterinary alternative medicine.)

I scratched my head awkwardly, walked over to Xu Xin, “Take off your shoe, I’ll spray some medicine.”

Xu Xin said nothing, took off her shoe, revealing her delicate foot. Nervously, I lifted her foot and sprayed the medicine.

“Does it still hurt?”

Xu Xin nodded. I sighed, “Let me massage it.”

“Is that okay?” Xu Xin’s face turned red. I pretended not to notice and gently massaged her foot.

I wasn’t trying to take advantage. I remembered my True Qi might help, so I found an excuse to use it for healing.

Sure enough, the swelling subsided visibly.

“Try standing. It should be better now.” I turned to the nurse, “Your medicine works fast!”

The nurse was surprised but proudly said, “Of course, my medicine is imported!”

What? Since when was Yunnan Ba!yao imported?
