Chapter 70: One Chance (part 1)

The moment Anna’s sword struck the monster’s spout, the not-so-sharp blade smashed into its face.

The superhuman strength unique to 3-star summons was enough to make the demons rethink their approach. Instead of charging in recklessly, they opted for a more strategic approach.

As the monsters formed a circle around her, Anna calmly raised her shield.

“Master.”

“Yes?”

“Get down.”

At that moment, Anna lifted her shield and spun in a full 360-degree turn. Blinding rays of light erupted from the shield, striking the demons with full force.

—Screech!

Anna’s Origin Art, Holy Brilliance, engulfed the demons. If they had been united, they might have withstood the attack by using each other as a shield. But because they were scattered, they were flung back without resistance.

“Get up, Master.”

“Aren’t we supposed to stay here?”

“If we return to the base from here, won’t we meet up with the others?”

“…What about the other cadets?”

“Don’t worry.”

Anna thought of Theresia and Empress, who were fighting alone at that very moment. Their personalities and temperaments couldn’t be more different, but…

There was one thing she was certain of.

“Those two don’t lose.”

They were invincible and unstoppable.

Whoooosh—!

A concentrated energy blast erupted, reducing the surrounding trees to ashes. Yet Empress continued firing her Mana Cluster Cannons, unconcerned by the burning forest.

“Just die already!”

Several Mana Cluster Cannons shot toward the demons.

However, the blasts were effortlessly sliced apart by the mantis demon’s scythe.

Empress found it absurd that a blade could cut through pure magical energy, but demons had always defied the laws of physics.

—Chitter!

Taking advantage of the opening, a spider-like demon lunged forward. Its venomous stinger shot toward Empress, but before it could land, Theresia intercepted it with her armored arm.

—Clang!

“Are you okay?”

“Shouldn’t I be asking you that?”

“I’m wearing armor.”

Theresia, despite staggering slightly from the impact, quickly recovered. She immediately cut down the lesser demons swarming toward her before shifting her focus to the high-ranking ones.

Even in perfect condition, taking on one of them alone would be difficult. If she kept wearing herself down like this, she’d be in real danger.

It was a good thing she had used her special arts from the start to thin out their numbers.

Sensing her master’s presence through her energy, Theresia shouted internally.

‘We need to get out of here…’

She recalled the flares they had launched into the sky earlier. Time was on their side, and the demons knew it, too.

“You think you can afford to let your guard down?”

“Hm?”

“In time, reinforcements from our side will arrive.”

“Hah… I was expecting something more ominous.”

Drool dripped from the spider-like demon’s large maw as it spoke in an eerie, rasping voice.

“We… do not flee. Do not mistake us for mere humans.”

“Humans like us, huh?”

Empress scoffed at the all-too-familiar words. The demon that had killed her comrade had once said the same thing.

And, just like that demon, this one would also fall to the very humans it looked down on.

“Then maybe you’ll understand after a taste of what humans can do.”

—Crackle.

A spark appeared at the tip of Empress’s wand, capable of burning everything it touched.

With her staff charged with concentrated mana, she pointed it forward and gave Theresia a subtle glance.

Understanding immediately, Theresia suddenly surged with a menacing aura, as if she were about to charge head-on—only to turn and bolt away with Empress in her arms.

“Bye-bye! We’re human, so we can run away!”

The demons immediately pursued them, but Empress, still held by Theresia, continued channeling energy into her staff.

“You idiots. Who said we were actually running?”

—Boom!

A single beam of light erupted from her wand, instantly melting the upper body of the spider demon.

Realizing its comrade had been taken down in an instant, the mantis demon abandoned its pursuit and instead stood guard over the corpse.

As I was heading toward the base in Anna’s arms, I suddenly heard heavy footsteps approaching from a distance.

“Iaaaan—!”

“…Noah?”

“Where are you?!”

“Noah?”

From atop a Colossus in the distance, Noah charged straight past me and into the forest.

Anna, making brief eye contact with me, quickly leaped onto the Colossus. Then, as Noah finally spotted me, her eyes widened in shock.

“Why are you here?”

“Well, I came up from down there.”

“Oh… right. That, uh… anyway! Ian! Are you okay?! Are you hurt anywhere?”

As we exchanged words, I glanced around. If reinforcements had been sent, Noah wouldn’t have come alone.

But no matter how much I looked, there wasn’t a single person who could be considered backup.

“Noah… where are the others?”
