Chapter 70: One Chance (part 2)

“Yes? I am the only one?”

“…Why is it only you?”

Noah listened to me and relayed what the Earl had said.

[Cadet Ian had volunteered to join the reconnaissance team, but if he enEarlered danger, there would be no chance of returning. This meant that a powerful enemy is lurking ahead, so we needed to prepare for the worst.]

Hearing this, Noah had run into the forest alone to rescue me.

After listening to her explanation, I let out a small sigh and flicked her forehead.

“Ah—!”

“What you did was too dangerous. Next time don’t come alone.”

Then, with cold eyes, I turned in the direction of the base. So, they really just abandoned me like that?

I spoke to Noah, my mind already made up. If I made it back, I would have my revenge one way or another.

“Noah.”

“Yes!”

“There’s still a demon inside that hasn’t escaped.”

“Uh… So there are still survivors?”

“You understand what I mean, right? Let’s go rescue them.”

“—Ah, got it!”

The moment I finished speaking, Noah grabbed the Colossus by the neck and raised her hand with enthusiasm.

“Let’s go! Colossus, sprint!”

“Goo—”

The Colossus lowered its stance, crouching down in a ready position. Then, pushing off the ground with immense force, it surged forward.

For a brief moment, it felt like the Earth’s rotation had accelerated.

With powerful strides, the Colossus soared through the air and landed at the exact spot where I had escaped.

“—!!”

“-!!”

Just as I thought I heard a voice from below, the Colossus lost its balance and crashed to the ground, rolling over.

“Hey!?”

“Master!”

The moment Noah and I leaped off the Colossus, Anna followed suit. But before we could regain our footing, the Colossus’s other leg was severed cleanly.

A sinking feeling filled my chest. I had seen this scenario somewhere before.

Then, emerging from the shadows, the demon who had cut through the Colossus’s ankle revealed itself.

“Hahaha… Isn’t this amusing, human?”

“Master, step back.”

“Tell me, where does sin lie? If there is sin, who is responsible for it? The gods? Humans? Or we demons ourselves?”

“Are you seriously pondering philosophy while your friend is lying there dead?”

I scoffed, glancing at the c0rpse of a spider demon sprawled on the ground. The demon before me continued muttering useless words.

Where did it get the idea that, after all the carnage I had caused, I’d suddenly be in the mood for a sentimental conversation?

“If you k!ll, you die. Simple as that.”

“—That’s right.”

At my words, the mantis demon buried its head in its fallen comrade’s c0rpse.

I tensed, expecting it to attack me. But instead, it started devouring the c0rpse.

I stood frozen, trying to process what I was witnessing.

In an instant, the mantis demon had consumed a b0dy twice its own size. Then, it slowly straightened, its posture unnervingly light.

“Then you die too.”

Mantis wings sprouted from its back—an unnatural, grotesque transformation triggered by cannibalism.

With only 3-star summons remaining, this was no longer just a battle for victory. It was a battle for survival.

‘No, where the hell did those two go?!’

Just as resentment built in my chest toward my missing allies, the mantis demon spread its wings, preparing to strike.

“Die—.”

“You die first—.”

A thunderous explosion rang out.

Mana cannons shot across the battlefield, slamming into the demon. As the force of the blast staggered it, Theresia rushed forward, her blade flashing as she targeted its vital points.

Acidic bl0od splattered everywhere, but no one here was weak enough to be affected by it.

Seeing Theresia and the others overwhelming the demon, Anna’s excitement surged. She dashed in without hesitation.

“Repentance Strike!”

Anna, having absorbed all the damage she had taken so far, unleashed it in a single devastating strike.

The mantis demon, which had just undergone rapid growth and believed itself invincible, perished in an instant.

I stood there, watching in disbelief.

“…What the hell?”

Of course, my team was strong.

[Third Person POV]

The two high-level demons had been reduced to corpses, while Ian and Noah returned with the remains of a top-tier demon.

A top-tier demon’s corpse was one of the rarest materials on the entire continent.

With this feat, Cadet Ian had accomplished something that could make him a duke.

And the Earl was well aware of that.

“I knew you could do it, Cadet Ian!”

“…Cut the crap, Earl.”

“Huh?”

Ian narrowed his eyes at the Earl, as if he already knew the truth. They were both on the same side, both humans. As he was quite useful, killing or harming him wasn’t an option.

But still—

“Let me get one hit in.”

“What—Wait!”

“PFFT—!”

Ian’s fist connected with the Earl’s face, sending him reeling.

The onlookers gasped in shock.

Yet, even after taking such a hard punch, the Earl muttered under his breath.

“…Thank you.”

“It was nothing.”

As the crowd watched the bizarre exchange—one man thanking another after being punched—they tilted their heads in confusion.
