âAre you awake?â
Hearing a voice filled with concern brought me back to my senses.
When I opened my eyes, I realized I was lying on a bed with a soft texture I was so familiar with. The bed, the decorations on the ceilingâeverything was recognizable.
No, it wasnât just familiar; it was a place I knew very well.
This was my room in Estelâs family estate.
ââŚUmm.â
I didnât know why, but I was certain that I had been asleep for quite a long time. I began recalling what had happened before I lost consciousness.
As I swallowed hard and tested my arms and legs, I felt them respond to my will. Fortunately, none of my limbs were missing.
That was a relief. At the very least, I wouldnât have to worry about which hand to hold a spoon with.
âDonât push yourself too hard. Youâve been healed for now, but you still need to rest. If you overdo it and get hurt again, Iâll be really angry.â
A gentle, kind, and very familiar voice spoke from beside me. I rolled my eyes and looked around, only to see a face I hadnât seen in a long time.
ââŚsaintess?â
Yes. Sitting right next to my bed was Ariel Thier, the future saintess whose divine power was so immense that she was already being called the incarnation of a goddess.
âAgain with that title. Didnât we agree last time to call each other by our first names? Please, call me Ariel, not some strange title like âsaintess.â Cain.â
ââŚI see. Ariel.â
For some reason, I had no choice but to nod at her words. If my guess was correct, she also had memories of the future, but I couldnât understand why she insisted on being called by her first name. Could it be that she didnât want me to realize she had returned from the future as well? If that were the case, it made sense why she stubbornly refused to be called a saintess.
After staring blankly at Arielâs face for a moment, I suddenly remembered something more urgentâsomething I needed to ask.
âBianca⌠What happened to Bianca?â
The last time I saw her, Bianca had collapsed after draining all of her mana. Of course, since Aria had been there, I believed she would have done the right thing, but even so, I couldnât help but worry.
ââŚDonât worry. Compared to the injuries youâve sustained, itâs ridiculousâ No, Bianca del Castana is doing just fine. Sheâs perfectly fine.â
After saying that, Ariel suddenly furrowed her brows and glared at me.
Judging by the way her cheeks puffed out slightly, she clearly wasnât pleased.
ââŚCain, why are you asking about her first? Shouldnât there be something else you and I should talk about before discussing another womanâs condition?â
Only then did I realize that I had done something to upset Ariel. Seeing her triumphant expression, as if she had caught me red-handed, made it clearâI had made a mistake.
ââŚAlright. Ariel, why are you here? From what Iâve heard, you rarely leave the Empire unless itâs for something importantâŚâ
ââŚ..â
Arielâs expression suddenly darkened. Maybe that wasnât the right question to ask.
ââŚCain. Are you seriously telling me that, out of all the things you could ask, the first thing you want to know is why Iâm here? Alright then, let me tell you. The reason Iâm here isnât anything complicatedââ
âSorry, but let me explain that part.â
Thud!
The door burst open without so much as a knock, and a woman strode into my room as if she owned the place.
It was none other than Iris el Devhart, who acted with complete confidence despite technically being a guest. Unfortunately, she held too high a status for anyone to scold her over something as trivial as good manners.
âYouâre finally awake, Cain. Watching you lie unconscious for over fifteen days was truly nerve-wracking.â
I couldnât help but reply in a dazed voice.
ââŚItâs been more than fifteen days since I passed out?â
âIf you hadnât done something reckless at the last moment, you wouldnât have lost consciousness in the first place. You should reflect on your actions.â
The âreckless actâ the princess was referring to must have been my decision to convert life energy into aura. Hearing her say that, I finally realized just how crazy I had been.
After scolding me, the princess turned her gaze toward Ariel, glancing at her with thinly veiled amusement.
âI couldnât help but overhear your conversation outside the door, Ariel Thiers. As a priestess, itâs your duty to heal the sick, but to use that as an excuse to satisfy your own selfish desires while begging for praise⌠Thatâs quite the spectacle. Arenât you ashamed?â
A sly smile played on the princessâs lips. No matter how I looked at it, she was clearly provoking Ariel.
âI donât know,â Ariel replied coolly. âI just find it amusing that someone who eavesdrops like a rat outside a door and then proudly barges in to reveal what she overheard has the nerve to talk about shame. So why should I feel ashamed?â
âHah. Youâre really something, Ariel Thiers. I expected you to at least have a shred of shame, but I see now that was wishful thinking. Impressive. At this rate, I wouldnât be surprised if you went as far as to break one of Cainâs limbs just so you could heal him and have him wag his tail in gratitude.â
