A million Yuan!?
Oh my gosh, in this big city, you can’t even buy a bathroom with that amount, but in the countryside, you can buy a house, a car, and even a wife. Maybe you could even have a few mistresses. For a high school student like me, a million Yuan is an astronomical sum!
“You’re not joking with me, are you?” I swallowed hard, looking at Qin Shousheng.
Qin Shousheng’s expression was unusually serious: “I am not joking.”
Seeing his expression, I finally confirmed that this guy really wanted to do a million-Yuan “business” with me. But I’m just a high school student, what could he want me for?
“I’m curious, Mr. Qin, what kind of business do you want to do?” A business worth a million Yuan really piqued my interest. Before he could speak, I continued, “If it involves any physical sacrifices, I definitely won’t do it!”
Suddenly, I felt a chill. Could this guy have some special hobby? The thought of it made a shiver run up my spine.
Qin Shousheng was taken aback by my words, then looked at me and helplessly shrugged: “I just need you to protect someone.”
“I’m just a high school student. I don’t think I can handle being a bodyguard,” I said, spreading my hands helplessly. This guy, to be honest, didn’t look like a good person. Dressed all in black with a wolf head tattoo on his hand, he looked like someone from the underworld.
Qin Shousheng laughed twice: “It’s precisely because you’re a student that I’m asking you!”
Because I’m a student? That doesn’t make any sense. If you need a bodyguard, go to a bodyguard company, why look for a student? It didn’t add up, so I asked him, “What do you mean by that?”
Qin Shousheng lit another cigarette and didn’t directly answer my question: “Xia Tian, my young friend, you’re quite the martial artist, aren’t you?”
“Martial artist? I’m really not,” I said with a smile. Although my physical condition improved greatly after building my foundation, I hadn’t actually practiced any martial arts like the Eighteen Dragon Subduing Palms or the Nine Yin Scripture. As for the Sunflower Manual? No way, not me!
Qin Shousheng was stunned by my response and then laughed: “Jumping three meters high, isn’t that something a martial artist would do? Or did I see it wrong?” Oh my god, he was referring to that incident. But what does that have to do with being a martial artist?
“Mr. Qin, I’m sorry, I just have good physical fitness, I haven’t practiced any martial arts…” I scratched my head, pretending to be a bit embarrassed. Qin Shousheng lowered his head, not looking at me, muttering, “No wonder it took you so long to deal with a few small-time punks…” Then he looked up at me: “But that doesn’t matter. With your potential, a little training will make you a good bodyguard.”
With that, he produced a few sheets of paper from somewhere and handed them to me: “Sign the contract. Once you sign, you’ll get an advance of fifty thousand. The rest will be given to you after the task is completed.”
I took the contract, holding the pen with trembling hands. Wow! Signing my name for fifty thousand? This is too good to be true! When Sister Lin comes to collect the rent, I’ll pay her one thousand in coins to get back at her!
The more I thought about it, the happier I got, and I signed my name right away and handed it back to Qin Shousheng. However, he didn’t take it but pushed it back to me: “There’s another copy. You keep one, and we keep the other.” Oh! So it wasn’t just one signature for fifty thousand, but two…
After signing my name twice, Qin Shousheng and I stamped our fingerprints on both copies, finalizing the deal. But it still felt a bit unreal to me.
Qin Shousheng shook my hand: “I hope we have a pleasant cooperation!” I grinned foolishly: “Yes, a pleasant cooperation, a pleasant cooperation…”
“Wait, who am I supposed to protect?” I suddenly realized I didn’t even know who I was supposed to protect and yet had already signed the contract. How foolish!
Qin Shousheng put the contract into his bag and handed me the other copy: “You’ll find out in due time. I’ll notify you in a few days for some training. The money will be transferred to your account shortly. Can you give me your phone number for contact?”
I reluctantly wrote my phone number on a piece of paper and handed it to Qin Shousheng.
“My young friend, I know you recently had some trouble. As a meeting gift, I’ve already taken care of it. Just focus on your classes for the next few days!” Qin Shousheng seemed very pleased after saying that. Hearing this, I immediately understood he was talking about Zhou Feng.
“Thank you very much,” I said. I had to thank him for solving my problem, though I would soon be protecting someone for him, so I didn’t owe him much.
Qin Shousheng opened the car door, signaling that I could leave. I got out of the car and suddenly remembered something. Before he closed the door, I turned back and asked, “For the training, do I have to pay for it myself?”
Qin Shousheng was taken aback, then laughed: “All expenses will be covered by me!”
“That’s good…” I said, then turned towards the school gate. Zhang Yu was still waiting for me. But before I had walked a few steps, I heard the sound of police sirens approaching. Looking up, I saw a police car slowly driving towards me.
Oh no! Seeing the police car reminded me of what I told Zhang Yu. I checked the time on my phone—damn it! Sixteen minutes had passed since I got in the car. No wonder Zhang Yu called the police.
As the police car arrived, Zhang Yu came rushing over, placing a hand on my shoulder: “You idiot, are you okay? You scared me to death.” Just as he finished, two police officers got out of the car.
Zhang Yu pointed to Qin Shousheng’s car: “He’s in there!”
“Leave this to us. You two step back,” one of the officers said, nodding. They then walked over to Qin Shousheng’s car and knocked a few times. Qin Shousheng got out with a confused look.
“You’re accused of kidnapping and extortion. Come with us to the station,” said the taller officer. Qin Shousheng was stunned, then smiled: “Can I make a phone call?”
“No talking!” The officer was clearly impatient and was about to cuff Qin Shousheng when he suddenly reached into his pocket. Both officers took a step back: “What… what are you doing? Are you trying to assault an officer?”
Unexpectedly, Qin Shousheng pulled out a few hundred-yuan bills and handed them to the officer, smiling: “I just want to make a call. Can you give me a break?” The officer grabbed the money, coughed, and said, “Make it quick. No funny business.”
Qin Shousheng’s eyes flashed with a cold light as he smiled: “Of course, of course.” He made a call, muttered a few words, and then handed the phone to the tall officer: “Your Chief Zhang wants to talk to you.”
The officer, who was counting the money, froze. The tall officer took the phone, his voice trembling: “Hello… Chief… Understood…” He then handed the phone back to Qin Shousheng, sweating profusely: “Sorry, I didn’t know you were friends with the chief. Here’s your money back…” He handed the money back to Qin Shousheng, then turned and ran, giving Zhang Yu a fierce glare as he passed by.
Qin Shousheng waved at me before driving away.
As I watched him leave, I wondered who Qin Shousheng really was. From our first meeting to the two officers running away in fear, it felt like I was unknowingly getting involved in something huge… something very, very huge…
