Chapter 23: Intermediate Level Demons (part 1)

“Are those guys stupid?” Stella exclaimed, scolding the cadets who had departed. Their decision to stay wasn’t just due to our good relationship but also because this mission was inherently a group endeavor.

Had it been a solo mission, the instructors would have led us to the battlefield instead.

Anyways, I decided to discuss pre-assigning positions for the remaining cadets in our group.

“Given it’s a group mission, setting positions for each other would be wise,” I suggested.

“Yeah, it’s not a bad idea since the four of us are already acquainted.” Noah agreed.

“Um, so… can I take the tank position?” Noah asked.

I nodded, arranging our positions. Noah became the tank, I was the sub-tank, Stella the main damage dealer, and Syrah the sub-damage dealer. Whether by coincidence or design, none of us had overlapping roles.

‘No surprise there,’ I thought. [Project Luna] allowed parties with NPCs, encouraging users to optimize the function. Overlapping positions with NPCs could lead to some being overlooked.

“Shall we go, then?” I took the lead, stepping towards the mountain.

“Salamander!” Stella, spotting the lowest-level demon, summoned the Salamander.

In a brief moment, the creature, deeply connected to her, accurately executed her intentions, spewing flames that precisely targeted the demon.

I wanted to question the sanity of breathing fire in the forest, but to my surprise, not a single leaf was burned. It seemed the summoned beast operated beyond physical laws, as it was defying the laws of physics to protect nature.

Observing Stella, Syrah approached and asked, “Why not summon Ifrit?”

“If I bring out Ifrit, it will become a solo show. Our instructors want us to work as a team,” Stella explained.

“Then me too,” Syrah insisted, summoning her 1-star summon.

Stella looked at her incredulously, “…what are you doing?”

“I’m summoning my summon too.”

“You’re here because of your family’s summon.”

“How about this?” Syrah pushed a cute Blue Bird toward Stella.

Caught off guard, Stella immediately redirected her attention, “Don’t be weird! This is like a battlefield!”

“But it’s more fitting for a girl to deal with cute things while playing.”

“…are you implying that my Salamander isn’t cute?”

“Honestly, it’s kind of repulsive. It’s very…reptilian.”

Seemingly understanding Syrah’s words, the distant Salamander shook its head gloomily. Even I could sense its discomfort.

“How can you say that, your family’s summon is a reptile too!”

“That’s why I didn’t summon it.”

“…stop it.”

Realizing the futility, I intervened to stop their quarrel. It might seem petty, but that’s how teenagers were.

“What are you two doing? Is it really important for summons to be cute?”

“It’s essential,” Stella insisted.

Yes many would choose a cute summon over an ugly one, but that only applied in the game, not in real life.

“Syrah, let’s not argue over nothing.”

“I’m bored.”

“Do you want me to leave you here?”

“…sorry.”

With Syrah’s surrender, she apologized to Stella. The two bowed to each other, but the previous tension lingered.

Helpless, I sighed and continued walking.

After a while, rustling from beyond the bushes caught my attention. So I summoned Anna and stayed vigilant.

“Anna.”

“Yes, Master.”

“Towards the side where you sense a demon.”

“Yes!”

Anna swiftly executed the Holy Brilliance, which was designed for quick use. It might seem like I was paranoid, however, in reality, hesitation meant death, so it didn’t hurt to be a bit careful.

In an instant, the lowest-level demons surrounded us. But none of us feared them.

“Come forth, Colossus!”

Noah summoned a colossal figure that stomped, obliterating the demons.

“Tanking is about ensuring our team stays unharmed, right?” Noah stated, directing the Colossus to eliminate the demons.

“So, ultimately, we just have to kill all the demons. Like catching a mole…” She added.

After wiping out the demons, she grinned awkwardly and scratched the back of her head.

“…ahahaha. I got them all.”

  1. “Tanking is about ensuring our team stays unharmed, right?”
a follower of the doctrine “nobody will notice if there is nobody to notice” tank version

  2. Whack a mole. Or Gotta catch’em all.
MC knows how to manage his harem, really? I would think he would be incompetent in this too.

    Thanks for chapter
