Chapter 26: Infinite Dungeon (part 1)

[Infinite Dungeon.]

PVE content designed for players who had successfully completed the game.

From the 100th floor onwards, demons more formidable than the game’s final boss, the Demon King, emerged. The number of levels at the dungeon’s end remained shrouded in mystery.

This was content that strained players’ finances to the limit.

‘Why introduce it so soon, though?’

Truth be told, players derided the Infinite Dungeon when it first appeared in the game.

Did it make sense for a dungeon with an unknown depth to reside beneath the academy?

This was the developers’ rationale.

[This was part of the planned content from the beginning.]

It had to be true, considering the circumstances.

‘I think I’m in trouble.’

As mentioned earlier, the Infinite Dungeon was a mystical labyrinth where demons stronger than the Demon King emerged, starting from the 100th floor. The depth was unfathomable, making it impossible to discern its bottom.

The users’ highest recorded floor was 283—a remarkable achievement obtained through deceptive summons, maximizing stats with each level-up, and growing alongside the most potent summons.

For denizens of another world incapable of leveling up, this dungeon was nothing short of a calamity.

“Why are you telling me this?”

“Well, I actually asked the instructors to investigate… All the instructors couldn’t enter through the entrance.”

“Yes? What is that…”

However, as he spoke, he began to speculate to some extent.

The Infinite Dungeon was designed for players who completed the game, and even then, NPC assistance was limited. In a way, it was natural for unqualified instructors to be barred from entering the dungeon.

“—So, I want you to investigate instead.”

“Yes.”

“Are there no second or third years?”

Why did it have to be me? There seemed to be no reason for the principal to come directly to me.

But the principal looked at me with an expression that suggested there was no other choice.

“Of course, I also suggested it to my second and third-year cadets.”

“But?”

“They all declined.”

“Even at the principal’s request?”

“I am asking them to enter a space where their life may be in danger.”

The principal sipped her tea, wearing a bitter expression.

“No one knows what’s in there.”

“How did you measure the depth?”

“How was it possible to gauge the depth with the power of magic…I have no idea what’s in it.”

“It’s magic.”

Then it made sense.

Magic.

It wasn’t as potent as a one-star summon, but it was a skill that could assist in real-life situations, even if it had to be learned for a lifetime.

Chewing on a sweet cookie, I turned to the principal.

“What if I refuse?”

“I’ll ask other first-year cadets, but…maybe everyone will refuse. Then what do you think will happen?”

“If that’s the case…”

“We’ll have to live in ignorance of the great dark secrets beneath the academy.”

A moment of silence followed. I had no intention of rejecting it.

I just didn’t want to accept it.

After all, no one else could enter this dungeon but me.

The principal sought either the elimination of the dungeon or the revelation of its secrets.

“If I go in, what can you do for me?”

As I spoke with a smirk, a smile appeared on the principal’s face.

“Anything…I can’t give you anything against the academy’s rules, and I also can’t guarantee that you would be able to maintain your grades.”

“Then?”

“The only thing the Academy can offer is… the highest practical reward for third graders. I’ll also give you a personal reward.”

“It’s a personal reward, so can I have a meal with the principal?”

“Is that what you want?”

At my strange request, the principal didn’t seem surprised at all. If I had suggested this to Stella, her face would have turned as red as her hair. The principal was indeed an adult.

“Let me decide who will enter the dungeon.”

“As long as you get the other person’s consent.”

In the end, I agreed with the principal and promised to enter the dungeon.

The appointed day was set for this weekend.

[Third Person POV]

Naturally, the discovery of a massive dungeon beneath the academy remained a secret shared only among the cadets.

Since the cadets who declined the mission were under a secrecy spell, not even a duke’s daughter could be aware of the dungeon’s existence.

“A dungeon?”

“Yes.”

So, it was only natural for Stella Eritz to question Ian’s words.

“Why is it in the academy?”

“That’s what I’m going to investigate…”

“Why are you telling me that?”

“Because it’s dangerous to go alone.”

Suddenly, Ian shivered as he sipped the cocoa that Nelia had brewed. Looking at that unfortunate face, it seemed as though a hundred years of experience was written on it.

But it was undeniably appealing.

To a summoner, a dungeon was a nest constructed by demons. For them, defeating demons was the most honorable task.

“What is the reward?”

“A reward?”

“Yes. You wouldn’t do such a dangerous thing for free, would you?”

However, Stella did not readily accept the offer.

Who would undertake such a dangerous task for free?

Upon hearing those words, Ian remembered the promise he had received from the principal.

“They will give the same rewards that the third years receive.”

“That much?”

“Yes, but I don’t know how much they get.”

“For each one-star summoner, it’s about a million credits…we’re 3-stars, so maybe ten million.”

Ian listened and calculated how much ten million credits would be.
